Capcom returns to its 8-bit roots in Mega Man Legacy Collection for Xbox One, PS4, PC

Retrogamers rejoice: Capcom revealed today that a six-game compilation starring its robotic mascot Mega Man will premiere for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC platforms this summer in North America and Europe. A Nintendo 3DS version is also in the works.

Mega Man Legacy Collection includes the six core-series Mega Man games originally released for the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System between 1987 and 1994. The package will also feature a history-spanning Museum Mode and a Challenge Mode that offers “remixe[d] gameplay segments from all six games” and “scaling difficulty objectives,” according to Capcom.

The last time players saw all six NES Mega Man games together in one collection was with 2004’s Mega Man Anniversary Collection for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and original Xbox. The 8-bit entries in the Mega Man series later made appearances on the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS via Nintendo’s Virtual Console service.

Capcom also returned to the 8-bit Mega Man formula in 2008’s Mega Man 9 and 2010’s Mega Man 10. Available digitally for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii consoles, Mega Man 9 and 10 took a deliberately retro-styled approach in a bid to appeal to long-time series fans. Both games featured 8-bit graphics and challenging gameplay in the vein of the franchise’s earliest entries.

Recent history hasn’t been kind to Mega Man, however. Capcom canceled its cross-console platformer Mega Man Universe and subseries sequel Mega Man Legends 3 in 2011, and while minor releases like Street Fighter X Mega Man have kept the series alive in spirit, Mega Man hasn’t fronted a major release in several years.

Mega Man Legacy Collection will be priced at $15 when it hits digital platforms this summer. A port for the Nintendo 3DS will launch digitally later this year. Capcom notes that further details regarding the compilation will be revealed at E3 next week.

Developer Digital Eclipse is working on a surprising project: Volgarr the Viking 2. The 2D retro sequel will launch on August 6 for PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The news is an out of left field reveal. The first Volgarr the Viking game released in 2013 and was made as an ode to 1080s classics like Ghosts 'n Goblins. Despite being a small release, it sold over 1 million copies over the past decade. As revealed during today's Guerrilla Collective stream, the series is coming back with a new sequel by Digital Eclipse, the team behind this year's Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story.

June 2024 is shaping up to be a pretty great month for PlayStation players. 3 first-party Xbox Game Pass games to try this weekend (June 7-9)

Microsoft will hold an Xbox Games Showcase and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Direct. this Sunday. These shows will provide a much better idea of what to expect from Xbox over the course of the next year or two. That's really needed right now, as Microsoft has struggled to keep online discussions around Xbox positive as it went multiplatform with some games, laid off thousands of developers, and outright shut down the developers of Hi-Fi Rush and Redfall. Based on leaks and my personal expectations for the showcase, there are three games you can play on Xbox Game Pass this weekend to prepare for the event.

The first is the latest first-person shooter in a long-running series by id Software that might be getting a medieval-set spinoff. After that, we have the fifth entry in a sci-fi Xbox series that still looks fantastic on Xbox Series X/S even though it came out in 2019. Finally, you can prepare for Avowed with the latest RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, a satirical sci-fi game where player choice is critical.
Doom Eternal
