Microsoft keeps the Xbox 360 with new games and a redesigned console

The Xbox One was the star of Microsoft’s show, but the nearly decade-old Xbox 360 wasn’t ignored during the presentation. After a bombastic trailer for Konami’s Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain showed the horsepower of the new machine, Microsoft’s Yusuf Mehdi came out to announce a brand new redesign of the Xbox 360 itself.

This will be the third redesign of the box since it debuted in November 2005, and Microsoft has already begun shipping the new Xbox 360 to retailers. Like the third revision of the PlayStation 3 that Sony released in 2012, the new Xbox 360 appears slightly smaller than the current version and is likely a reflection of lowered production costs.

Microsoft also confirmed changes to its Xbox Live Gold premium subscription, giving away free games like Assassin’s Creed 2 in a PlayStation Plus-style service. Unlike Sony’s subscription service, where users lose the games if they cancel their memberships, Microsoft promises Xbox Live Gold players can keep these games even if they do not renew subscriptions.

In addition to previously announced Xbox 360 games due later this year like Grand Theft Auto V, Dark Souls II, and Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Microsoft also announced some brand new games for the old man of the console industry. Wargaming.net will release a new console version of its hugely popular World of Tanks. There was also a new kids property called Max: The Curse of Brotherhood, a charming 2D platformer.

The Nintendo Switch, in many ways, is the ultimate handheld gaming device. Everything Nintendo has released since the Gameboy has culminated here. That makes it even more exciting when they commit some serious resources to making the mobile aspect as good as it can be. For instance, adding an OLED screen. The Nintendo Switch OLED is an obvious upgrade that will be most exciting for people who like to game on the go. If you don't own an OLED TV already, you might find yourself playing it in handheld mode just for the gorgeous visuals. When comparing the Switch OLED versus the standard Switch, the only real difference is the screen and a slight memory upgrade. Unfortunately, there currently aren't any good deals on bundles or consoles for the Nintendo Switch OLED, so the best thing to do is go for a refurbished version if you want to buy cheaper.

Will Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 be on Xbox Game Pass?

Activision Blizzard, which is now owned by Microsoft, has just confirmed that the next Call of Duty game is titled Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. There's been one major point of contention ahead of this year's Call of Duty: Will it be on Xbox Game Pass at launch? A new report from The Wall Street Journal suggests that is the case.

Historically, Microsoft has added all its first-party games from Xbox Game Studios and Bethesda to Game Pass the day they launched. That applies to big AAA releases like Starfield, as well as more experimental titles like 2022's Pentiment and Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, which came out this week. Microsoft's public messaging thus far has teased that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will come to the Xbox Game Pass. That said, Microsoft has not officially confirmed it, so there have been conflicting reports on this actually being the case.
