Buried among Microsoft’s complex financial records that include things like “deferred income tax” and ” Net unrealized gains on investments,” the company confirmed to investors that it shipped 3.9 million Xbox One consoles during the period between its November 22 launch and the end of 2013. Microsoft also shipped 3.5 million Xbox 360s between October and December 2013, and announced its Financial Year ’14 Q2 revenue to be $24.52 billion.
There is always a discrepancy between the number of a product shipped and the number of that product that was actually sold, but with demand still running high for the Xbox One and the console sold out in most places, Microsoft can rest assured that those 3.9 million consoles are likely to end up in consumer hands if they aren’t already. That total is also significantly higher than earlier reports from Microsoft, which claimed that it had sold 3 million Xbox One units in 2013.
“Our Commercial segment continues to outpace the overall market, and our Devices and Consumer segment had a great holiday quarter,” Chief Executive Officer at Microsoft, Steve Ballmer said. “The investments we are making in devices and services that deliver high-value experiences to our customers, and the work we are doing with our partners, are driving strong results and positioning us well for long-term growth.”
For those curious about how the Xbox One’s numbers look compared to the PlayStation 4, you’ll have to wait a bit longer. Sony has yet to release its quarterly results.
