Ubisoft offers Might & Magic Heroes VII refunds after shipping disc-less Collector’s Edition

Ubisoft is offering refunds for players who purchased the recently released North American Collector’s Edition of Might & Magic Heroes VII, following the recent revelation that the package did not include a physical DVD copy of the game as advertised.

Affected players are also eligible to receive a free digital code redeemable for one of five Ubisoft-published PC games.

An Imgur album linked from a popular Reddit thread offers proof that Ubisoft advertised a physical DVD as part of Might & Magic Heroes VII‘s Collector’s Edition package on several occasions. The publisher also hosted an official unboxing stream on Twitch, clearly showing a DVD case among the European Collector’s Edition contents.

When players in North America received their Collector’s Edition packages, however, they found empty space where the game’s DVD case and CD soundtrack would normally be located. When many affected customers approached Ubisoft for a resolution, support agents automatically redeemed digital copies of the game to user uPlay accounts as compensation.

Players who then asked for a refund were denied, as the company afterward claimed that returns for items including digital codes could not be returned, even if they were automatically redeemed against customer wishes. Widespread fan outcry later led Ubisoft to reverse its decision.

“Ubisoft regrets any confusion created by the marketing materials from our Might and Magic Heroes VII Collector’s Edition,” the company stated. “We understand that some customers in North America were not aware the Collector’s Edition delivered digital versions of the game and soundtrack. Ubisoft apologizes for any frustration and disappointment resulting from these items being in digital format vs. physical format.”

Ubisoft is now offering full refunds for affected players. Users who request refunds will also receive a free digital PC game of their choice from a selection that includes Far Cry 4, Assassin’s Creed Rogue, The Crew, Toy Soldiers: War Chest Hall of Fame Edition and Zombi.

In a company interview with CEO Yves Guillemot posted on the Ubisoft website Thursday, the executive reveals that there are remakes of Assassin's Creed games in the works, although he doesn't specify which ones.

"Players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we've created in the past and modernize them," he says, implying that it could pertain to games made before Odyssey. "There are worlds in some of our older Assassin's Creed games that are still extremely rich."

There have been a few Xbox devices that have never come to fruition, one of which was Keystone, a prototype for an affordable game streaming device you could hook up to your TV or monitor. Thanks to a surfaced patent, we've gotten an even closer look at what it would've potentially looked like.

The patent, first spotted by Windows Central, gives us a more complete view of the device. We've previously seen the Keystone in the flesh. Microsoft Gaming head Phil Spencer is known for hiding teases and interesting collectibles on the shelf in his office. In a 2022 X (formerly Twitter) post congratulating Bethesda on Fallout's 25th anniversary, you can see a small white device on the top shelf that's actually a Keystone prototype. Xbox told Digital Trends that it was a version of the device made before it decided to "refocus our efforts on a new approach.”
