While you sipped on spiked egg nogs and avoided the in-laws this holiday season, Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson bought himself the ultimate Christmas gift: A $70 million Beverly Hills mansion. Yes, you read that correctly. Seventy. Million. Dollars.
He supposedly paid in cash, too.
Not only did Persson emerge the top bidder for this dream house listing, but it’s reported he beat out the likes of Jay-Z and Beyonce for the new digs. While the pictures don’t come close to doing this place justice, they do offer a small glimpse into what’s available to purchase for a mere $70 million.
Chock full of the typical flair you might expect out of a house sporting the iconic 90210 zip code, the gigantic 23,000 square foot pad features some unique tricks up its sleeve. For starters, the house’s staggering price tag included all the furniture, electronics, and other contents used during the realtor’s staging. Even that gorgeous Bugatti in the basement now belongs to Notch. The living room features a 54-foot curved glass wall which opens to reveal a gorgeous infinity pool, as well as a stunning panoramic view of nearby Los Angeles. Persson even has the ability to control all the outdoor fountains with just a couple of swipes on the included iPads.
For those days Persson decides to entertain guests — and why wouldn’t he? — his new pad comes chock full of amenities for literally anyone to enjoy. Fancy a drink? The house boasts fully stocked vodka and tequila bars, and even came furnished with boxes of Dom Perignon champagne in case Persson’s friends desire some bubbly. If alcohol isn’t their flavor of choice then they’d no doubt enjoy perusing the massive selection of sweets located in the house’s $200,000 candy room. Once they’ve stuffed enough M&M’s and Hot Tamales in their pockets, it’s time to hunker down in the 18-seat, tiered screening room which easily rivals Cinetopia’s living room style theaters.
There’s also an 18-foot onyx dining room table outfitted with 24 Roberto Cavalli place settings (valued at $3,700 each), as well as three 90-inch HDTVs which bring panoramic views of LA to the downstairs lounge. Even the bathrooms — all 15 of them — feature top-of-the-line Toto Neorest toilets valued at an astounding $5,600 a piece. It sports a full workout facility, pool and foosball tables, vehicle showroom (for those Bugattis, of course), as well as incredible artwork strewn throughout. One of the art highlights is the replica of James Dean’s motorcycle sitting under a massive James Dean print; it doesn’t get cooler than that.
The estate also features eight bedrooms, of which (obviously) the master suite is the flashiest. With its own private viewing window to downtown LA, the master bedroom also has access to a private outdoor patio and pool. Persson’s master bathroom features a giant glass shower, and also touts a gorgeous standalone granite bathtub which has — you guessed it — its own views of the city. Why stop there? Add on two, gigantic walk-in closets which possess more square footage between them than most studio apartments.
It didn’t take Persson long to start spending some of the $2.5 billion Microsoft paid last September for the acquisition of Mojang, the studio behind the smash hit Minecraft. After the sale, Persson released a statement saying he didn’t sell the company for the money, but rather to maintain his sanity. Though spending a cool $70 million seems a high price to pay to preserve one’s mental health, it’s likely his worries of staying sane are long gone.
