Minecraft is finally coming to the Wii U

Minecraft is available on almost every conceivable platform, from the PS4 to Windows Phone to Linux, with Nintendo consoles being the major exception.

Thankfully, Nintendo has worked with Mojang to bring the sandbox experience to the Wii U by Christmas. It will start selling the game on December 17 for $30, with all of the features available in the other console versions.

Nintendo plans to launch new Minecraft content for fans in the near future, and this might include some Nintendo-themed skin packs and worlds. All DLC and skin packs available on other console versions will be available on Wii U, but downloads from other console versions will not be ported over to the Wii U.

Off-TV gameplay will be supported on the Wii U, allowing users to move from the TV to the Gamepad without an interruption to the game. The performance downgrade from the Xbox One/PS4 will not affect the in-game performance of Minecraft, meaning Wii U players should be able to build worlds of the same magnitude.

Aside from Telltale’s spin-off Minecraft: Story Mode, this is the first Mojang game to come to a Nintendo console. Surprisingly, Minecraft is still not available for the Nintendo 3DS, despite the handheld console selling more units than the Xbox One and PS4 combined, according to VGChartz. Nintendo did not reveal any plans to bring Minecraft to other Nintendo platforms.

This is the first platform launch for Minecraft this year, showing the disconnect between Nintendo and Mojang. We still don’t know if Microsoft or Nintendo caused the delay, or if Mojang simply didn’t value the Wii U platform. This will not be the last platform launch however, with the Oculus Rift and Microsoft HoloLens scheduled to receive the sandbox game in the coming months.

Considering the rest of the Xenoblade Chronicles series is on Nintendo Switch, it's very surprising that Xenoblade Chronicles X has not made the jump over yet. This RPG stands as the black sheep of the series, with a more gritty style and tone, mech suits, and a plot about humans who crash land on an alien planet after escaping Earth, which might be why it didn't come over before the trilogy was completed. Xenoblade Chronicles X is a great game in its own right, though, and also makes ample use of the Wii U GamePad for its detailed map and menus. As such, it's a worthwhile Wii U pickup for those who like to play games uniquely tailored to the system and enjoy seeing what the oddball entries in game franchises have to offer.

Nintendo's Wii U is notorious for how hard it flopped and for providing the Switch with some of its best ports, but that doesn't mean it didn't have worthwhile games that are still exclusive to it. While many Wii U games have escaped to other platforms and Game Boy Advance games are now coming to Nintendo Switch, some experiences are uniquely suited to the Wii U GamePad or aren't able to make the jump elsewhere due to other outside factors.

Minecraft takes a firm stance on blockchain tech by banning NFTs

Minecraft developer Mojang has officially taken a stance against NFTs and other blockchain technology, banning players from creating digital assets based on Minecraft or integrating blockchain technology into Minecraft servers.
The statement came in a July 20 post on Minecraft's website that breaks down what NFTs are and why Mojang and Microsoft don't want to associate Minecraft with the controversial technology. "To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our client and server applications, nor may Minecraft in-game content such as worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods be utilized by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset," the post says.

A cursory search on NFT marketplaces like OpenSea immediately exposes many unofficial Minecraft NFTs being sold without Mojang or Microsoft's involvement. Mojang's post also explains that blockchain technology could also potentially be used by some server owners to reward players with exclusive content for their actions (and transactions) in and outside of the game and introduce players to a wildly unstable currency marketplace.
As such, it's understandable why Minecraft's owners want to take action to clarify their NFT stance and crack down on blockchain initiatives that are using the IP without permission. Ultimately, the blog post also explains that the decision comes down to the fact that NFTs "can create models of scarcity and exclusion that conflict with our guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft."
As Minecraft is one of the most popular games in the world, Mojang taking a firm stance against NFTs and blockchain technology does show just how far blockchain technology is from being accepted by the gaming community, whether that be players or developers. Mojang does say that it is "paying close attention to how blockchain technology evolves over time to ensure that the above principles are withheld and determine whether it will allow for more secure experiences or other practical and inclusive applications in gaming," so this stance may change in the future. For now though, Mojang and Microsoft are keen on keeping NFTs and blockchain technology far away from Minecraft.
