Mega Man devotees have been breathlessly following the development of Mighty No. 9, Keiji Inafune’s spiritual sequel to the legendary platforming series he created in the late ’80s.

After a goal-shattering Kickstarter campaign last summer, the game has been in development with regularly shared progress updates and footage. The latest video shows off some of protagonist Beck’s transformations, including a sword-wielding form that looks suspiciously like Mega Man X favorite Zero, with his signature red armor and yellow ponytail.

The footage also shares a first look at Call (har har), Beck’s playable female counterpart. Her jetpack-powered play-style seems to be more about mobility and evasion, but this may just be a function of having fewer animations than Beck in this early build.

The gameplay is classic Mega Man platforming with a beautiful HD makeover. The music will also make you feel right at home, with the game’s soundtrack being created by Mega Man 1 & 2 composers Manami Matsumae and Takashi Tateishi. The dash from Mega Man X makes a prominent return, now doubling as an attack to finish of foes and maintain momentum to build up combos as you tear through the level.

Mighty No. 9 is scheduled to release in spring 2015 on basically every platform imaginable.

Sonic Frontiers gameplay footage shows off Sonic’s new moves
sonic frontiers gameplay revealed teaser trailer

Sega seems to be kicking off Summer Games Fest pretty early by giving us a first look at the gameplay for its highly anticipated Sonic game, Sonic Frontiers.

Sega tweeted the latest teaser trailer as an IGN First exclusive on Tuesday, and it shows Sonic sprinting through the lush fields of Starfall Island, running on a cybernetic hamster wheel to send some sort of signal, grinding rails around skyscraper ruins, and kicking enemies around like Deku in My Hero Academia. Alongside the gameplay, we also get a look at the new Sonic Frontiers logo, which sports a blue eye for the "o" in the fragmented latter word.

Mario Kart 8’s DLC shows 9 isn’t coming anytime soon
Mario, Link, Isabelle, and a Squid Kid race down the track in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch.

During February's Nintendo Direct, Nintendo announced that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be getting 48 new courses as paid DLC. All of the tracks are remastered courses from previous Mario Kart titles, from Super Mario Kart to the recent Mario Kart Tour, and will be released in six packs of eight. The first pack will arrive on March 18, and the rest of them will be added periodically through the end of 2023.

While exciting, this announcement is also a death knell for anyone hoping for Mario Kart 9. It shows that Nintendo is planning to support the Switch title through 2023, potentially pushing a new Mario Kart entry back to the next console generation. Nintendo has always been known to buck trends and defy norms, but Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's DLC delivery dates shed some light on the true longevity of both Mario Kart and the Switch.
