A new Need for Speed game will arrive by next year

After a reboot in 2015 and a complete no-show last year, Electronic Arts’ Need for Speed franchise is making its return, and the publisher believes that the extra wait will be worth it for longtime fans.

“We’ve given this game an extended development cycle to focus on innovation, and the Need for Speed team is pushing the boundaries of action driving with what we believe is the most exciting and best-looking Need for Speed game we’ve ever produced,” said Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson during an investor briefing Tuesday.

The announcement doesn’t make any mention of the studio responsible for developing the new Need for Speed game. For the last several years, the franchise has been handled by Ghost Games.

Prior to that, Burnout and Black developer Criterion Games was in charge, developing the excellent Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Following those games, the developer began development an extreme sports racing game, but it was canceled and Criterion is now primarily working on Star Wars projects.

The last two installments, however, didn’t quite live up to the franchise’s usually lofty standards. Need for Speed: Rivals launched alongside the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but also released on last-generation consoles and failed to show off the power of the new systems. After a year off in 2014, the series was rebooted with Need for Speed in 2015. We called it a “mixed bag of tricks that the series has picked up over the years” and criticized the cheesy full-motion video sections that move forward the game’s cringe-worthy story.

With any luck, this new entry will return to the arcade-focused, fun-over-realism style that made the Need for Speed series so great, allowing other, more authentic simulations like Forza and Gran Turismo to offer a different take on the genre.

One of the best games of the year is finally coming to Xbox next month

Larian Studios confirmed that the Xbox version of Baldur's Gate 3 will still be coming out this year by announcing its December release window.

"Xbox players, we hear you’re looking for more news on Baldur’s Gate 3. The game is on track for a December release," Larian Studios stated on X (formerly Twitter). There's no specific release date yet, but Larian's tweet reveals when we'll learn more. "We’ll see you at The Game Awards for the World Premiere of the exact release date," the developer teased. Geoff Keighley's video game award show takes place every December and is always full of announcements in addition to awards. The show is shaping up to be a big one for Baldur's Gate 3, as it's nominated in nine categories -- including Game of the Year and Best RPG -- and will have its December release date revealed there.

The next Mass Effect gets a new teaser on N7 Day

Update: BioWare still had another surprise up its sleeve for this N7 Day, with multiple countdown timers on its website slowly ending and revealing clips from a new teaser. They now all seem to be out, and the official Mass Effect YouTube channel has posted the full video titled "N7 Day 2023." In it, we see a character walking through a hangar. They then turn around, revealing a jacket with the N7 logo on it, but a helmet obscures their identity. They then take out a gun, walk out toward the alien planet, and the title card saying Mass Effect appears. Mike Gamble tweeted out the video, saying, "look closely." N7 Day 2023
It's November 7, 2023, which means it's also N7 Day, where EA and BioWare celebrate the Mass Effect series, which has a new game in development. While we didn't get any new art or another trailer this year, a message from Mike Gamble, Mass Effect franchise director and executive producer, does tease story elements for the next mainline Mass Effect game.
Specifically, he heavily teases the new Mass Effect game's connection to the original trilogy by going over many of the questions BioWare has had to ask itself during the game's development. The blog post includes a list of juicy questions that the next game may explore.

A brand new South Park game was shown during today's THQ Nordic Digital Showcase 2023. South Park: Snow Day! is a 3D isometric action game that supports multiplayer and will release next year.

South Park has a somewhat rocky history with video games. Things started out with some bad titles in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but Ubisoft released the solid RPGs South Park: The Stick of Truth and South Park: The Fractured But Whole throughout the 2010s. THQ Nordic, which has dipped its toe into licensed games with two SpongeBob titles, first teased a new South Park game at the end of last year's showcase. We hadn't heard about the game again until today when the announcement for South Park: Snow Day! kicked off this year's presentation.
As its title suggests, South Park: Snow Day! follows Cartman, Kyle, Stan, and Kenny as they play with each other on a snow day and take things way too far, turning the town into a war zone. Strange Scaffold's Xalavier Nelson Jr. confirmed that he provided writing on the game. We see a little bit of gameplay in its reveal trailer, and it looks like a multiplayer isometric action game in the style of something like Diablo 4 or Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. Unlike the last two South Park games, this one's in 3D.

Outside of that, we don't know much else about South Park: Snow Day! Hopefully, we'll learn more at Gamescom 2023 and as it approaches release. South Park: Snow Day! will be released for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch in 2024.
