Amazon rolls out New World combat trailer; closed beta to launch in July

Amazon Game Studios has rolled out a combat trailer for New World, the upcoming MMORPG that’s set to launch in closed beta in July before its planned August release.

The combat trailer, which was featured in the PC Gaming Show, showcased some of the weapons, skills, and spells that New World players will be able to wield, as well as some of the opponents that they may face — from fellow humans to gruesome monsters.

New World: Combat Unleashed

The massive floating skull with lasers shooting from its eyes that appears at the end of the trailer looks like a formidable opponent, to say the least, and would likely make for a fun boss fight.

Closed beta

Along with the release of the combat trailer, Amazon Game Studios also announced that the New World closed beta will launch on July 23 and be accessible to players who have pre-ordered the game and those who are already part of the closed alpha test. Sign-ups will also be opened for those who have not pre-ordered, with participants from this group randomly selected.

Amazon Game Studios said that there are “many improvements and changes” between the game’s closed alpha and closed beta. Digital Trends has reached out for more information on these changes, and we will update this article as soon as we hear back.

The New World closed beta currently has no end date, but it will close before the MMO’s planned launch date on August 25.

“The big thing we want to see is how the game holds up at scale,” David Verfaillie, New World’s head of player experience, told VentureBeat. “We want to know how the servers hold up, how lag-free the play will be, and if the frame rate is good. We’re going to get a lot of information about how it plays.”

New World will follow Crucible, a team-based multiplayer shooter that launched in May as Amazon’s first video game.

Age of Mythology: Retold will launch on PC and Xbox at the same time
Key art for Age of Mythology: Retold.

Microsoft and World's Edge gave us our first glimpse of its upcoming remaster of real-time strategy game Age of Mythology: Retold during Friday's New Year, New Age livestream. They also confirmed that it will launch on PC and Xbox later this year.

Age of Mythology: Retold's segment of the livestream began with Art Director Melinda Rose introducing the gameand  teasing that it will contain all-new 3D character models, animation, textures, and UI. Rose also highlighted the details of the character models for units like Medusa, Pegasus, and Cerberus. Each time players upgrade a unit, their design will change slightly. We then got a look at its key art, as well as confirmation that Age of Mythology: Retold will be released later this year. It will launch on both PC and Xbox at the same time and is the first World's Edge game to do so.

Amazon’s Blue Protocol has the potential to be my gateway MMO
A group of Blue Protocol players stands together.

I’m not a big fan of MMOs. I find them much too grind-heavy and often find the gameplay of titles like World of Warcraft to somehow be both unnecessarily complex and boring at the same time. More traditional games in the genre fell out of favor throughout the 2010s, which is why Amazon’s concerted effort to corner the MMO market recently intrigues me. Has it found the secrets to creating a compelling modern MMO?

That’s why I agreed to check out two Amazon MMOs at Summer Game Fest Play Days last month. While Throne & Liberty failed to impress me, I had a much better time with Blue Protocol.

The Outer Worlds 2: release date speculation, trailer, and more
A person in a spacesuit looks out over and alien landscape in the trailer for The Outer Worlds 2.

Not to be confused with The Outer Wilds, the indie title that launched in the same year as The Outer Worlds, The Outer Worlds 2 is an upcoming sequel to the dystopian sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, which Xbox announced during E3 2021. The original game was often referred to as a Fallout game but in space, which makes sense because Obsidian was responsible for what many consider one of the best, Fallout: New Vegas. It was a well-received game, though not without some flaws, leading many to wonder whether or not this new universe would ever come back. Many (including us) were surprised to see news about this game, and while there isn't much to go on just yet, we can make a few informed guesses on details we will get later on. For now, here's everything we know, and suspect, about The Outer Worlds 2.
Release date

The initial reveal not only didn't have a release date, but was itself a parody of teaser trailers that have little to no information in them. All we can do for now is speculate on when we think The Outer Worlds 2 will actually be ready. The Outer Worlds came out near the end of 2019, but the last chunk of DLC for the game didn't hit until the end of 2021. The best-case scenario would be that a smaller team handled the DLC while another small team got to work on preproduction on the full-fledged sequel, but it is also possible that there was a gap of time before it was actually greenlit.
