Nintendo hypes the launch of Super Nintendo World with help from Charli XCX

Years in the making, Super Nintendo World is opening soon at Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in the city of Osaka.

The gaming giant has just turned the hype dial all the way up to 11 with the release of a mind-blowing music video to promote the much-anticipated spring opening.

The company also confirmed the attraction will offer visitors a smart wrist-based wearable called a Power Up Band that essentially turns Super Nintendo World into a giant video game. The band lets wearers collect coins and perform other familiar Nintendo gameplays as they make their way around the park.

“Super Nintendo World will provide an experience you cannot have anywhere else,” USJ Chief Executive Officer J.L. Bonnier told Bloomberg on Monday.

There has also been talk that the theme park could integrate the Nintendo Switch, though the company is yet to confirm this. What we do know is that the first phase of the park will include two rides — Super Mario Kart Ride and Yoshi’s Adventures.

We Are Born To Play

USJ collaborated with British pop sensation Charli XCX and Swedish electronic dance duo Galantis for the We Are Born To Play video, though the CGI-heavy production offers few clues as to how the theme park will actually look.

Incorporating many of the gaming sounds Nintendo fans have become familiar with over the years, the video kicks off with clips showing people around the world playing their favorite games on Switches and smartphones.

When the green pipe appears, the players can’t resist diving in for the adventure of a lifetime. Suddenly finding themselves right in the middle of Super Nintendo World (or an extreme version of it), Charli XCX makes her grand entrance, hanging out with Toad atop Peach’s Castle.

The players are clearly having a whale of a time at the park, though they seem to be expending an enormous amount of energy with so much running, jumping, and dancing. Hopefully, visitors will be able to take in the real Super Nintendo World at a slightly more leisurely pace when they visit the place later this year.

Nintendo fans who can’t make it to Japan for the USJ attraction will be able to enjoy a similar experience at Super Nintendo World attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Orlando, though we’re still waiting for opening dates.

Nintendo introduces a new Super Smash Bros. Switch OLED for Black Friday
Super Smash Bros. Nintendo Switch OLED.

Nintendo unveiled all of the Black Friday deals and bundles it plans to offer in the coming weeks. These offerings are headlined by a brand new Nintendo Switch bundle with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that has never been available before.
The Nintendo Switch -- OLED Model: Super Smash Bros. Ulitmate Bundle costs $350 and comes with a code for the fantastic 2018 crossover fighting game as well as three months of a Nintendo Switch Online Membership. The bundle's Joy-Cons feature a design based on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Unfortunately, this deal includes neither Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Fighter Passes nor the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. Nintendo says this bundle will be released on November 19, although they've already been spotted in some stores.
The other big new offering from Nintendo this holiday season is the Super Mario Party + Red & Blue Joy-Con Bundle. It costs $100 and includes a download code for Super Mario Party in addition to Red and Blue Joy-Con controllers. Keep in mind that this bundle includes 2018's Super Mario Party, not 2021's Mario Party Superstars, which remastered a lot of content from the series' older games.

Nintendo also plans to offer bundles that have been available before, like the Nintendo Switch Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Bundle and Animal Crossing: New Horizons Nintendo Switch Lite.
Various game discounts for Switch games will also go into effect on November 19. In terms of Nintendo-published games, people can expect Everybody 1-2-Switch! and Nintendo Switch Sports to be discounted by $10, titles like Luigi's Mansion 3, Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 to have $20 discounts, and for Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Mario Strikers: Battle League, and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes to all be available $30 cheaper than usual. Sadly, it does not look like Nintendo itself will offer any major deals surrounding this year's The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
All of these bundles and deals will become available on November 19.

Super Mario RPG is halfway between a remaster and remake
Mario, Mallow, Bowser, and Geno stare off-screen in Super Mario RPG.

Between The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, it’s been a banner year for the Italian video game icon – and it’s not over yet. On November 17, Nintendo will cap off a successful 2023 with the hotly anticipated Super Mario RPG. The surprising release brings back one of the plumber’s most eccentric adventures, 1996’s Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for the Super Nintendo. It’s a neglected cult classic that’s been long overdue for some attention.

The question, though, is what kind of treatment a title like that deserves. Should Nintendo simply have rereleased it on Switch Online? Would an HD remaster suffice? Or was a full remake in order? If the Switch version is any indication, Nintendo may have found itself a little stumped with that question too.

Our 10 favorite Wonder Effects in Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Wonder Flower in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder's defining gimmick is its series of Wonder Effects. A Wonder Flower is hidden somewhere on almost every level and, once found, radically switches up what is going on within that stage. Some expand on ideas the stage was already exploring, while others are wildly unpredictable, giving players something they were not expecting at all.

There are over 69 stages with Wonder Effects that players can see while playing through the story of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, but 10 of those Wonder Effects effects stood out the most during my playthrough. By order of appearance, these are my 10 favorite Wonder Effects in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which showcase just how inventive and unpredictable the platformer is.
