Baseball! Apocalypse! Prison! Here are October’s Games With Gold for the Xbox

Xbox - October Games with Gold
It may only be September 21, but Microsoft has already revealed the free games Xbox Live Gold members will be receiving in October through the Games With Gold program. Whether you like baseball, extreme sports, or surviving alone in the apocalypse, next month has got you covered.

Starting October 1 and running until the end of the month, Xbox One owners will be able to grab Super Mega Baseball: Extra Innings for free. With no realistic simulator to play on the Xbox One, this is the best option for baseball fans. It has been met with fairly positive reviews, with particular praise directed at its pick-up-and-play style of gameplay. The game launched on the Xbox One last year after about nine months of PlayStation exclusivity.

From October 16 until November 15, Xbox One players will also be able to pick up The Escapists, a stealth- and strategy-filled adventure about an inmate yearning to once again see the outside world. The game is also available on Xbox 360, as well as PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, and Linux.

For the first half of October, MX vs. ATV Reflex will be available free of charge for the Xbox 360. It will be followed by Ubisoft’s I Am Alive from October 16 until the end of the month. The latter game takes place in a desolate post-apocalyptic world, and features survival mechanics we haven’t seen in too many games, including the ability to “hold up” enemies, even if your gun has no ammunition. Its drab, gray color scheme and foggy skies perfectly capture the essence of a dead planet. As with all recent Xbox 360 Games With Gold offerings, both MX vs. ATV Reflex and I Am Alive will also be playable on Xbox One.

Doom: The Dark Ages launches next year, and Xbox is bringing it to PS5
Doom: The Dark Ages Doomslayer

During the June 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft revealed Doom: The Dark Ages. It's a medieval take on the first-person shooter series that's typically set during contemporary times. It's set to launch in 2025 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. The game will also launch on Xbox Game Pass.

Doom: The Dark Ages is a prequel, with the Doomslayer donning animal fur and spikes on his shoulder-blade armor. With his trusty and classic shotgun, he's ready to take down demons. However, he now has a new shield with blades that he can rev up like a chainsaw. The trailer shows the Doomslayer even throwing his shield at them like Captain America. He will also be able to ride a dragon at some point in the game, highlighting the fantasy elements of the game.

Amazon’s ambitious MMO New World is finally coming to PS5 and Xbox this October
Key art for New World Aeternum.

Amazon is finally bringing its MMO New World to consoles this October, and that’s coming as part of a larger rework of the fantasy game called New World: Aeternum.

When New World hits consoles on October 15, it will also add crossplay, so you can group up with your friends on different platforms. That said, it won’t feature cross-progression, as the characters you make will be locked to whatever platform you made them on. The controls and UI have also been reworked to function better with a controller, and Amazon Games expects New World to keep update parity across all three platforms starting this October.
