Lucioball and some sweet 2017 Summer Games skins arrive in ‘Overwatch’

Overwatch Seasonal Event | Summer Games 2017
Blizzard’s Overwatch Summer Games event has arrived, which means Lucioball has returned! From now until August 29, Overwatch players can compete in the special soccer mode, as well as don some pretty cool summer-themed skins, including Soldier: 76‘s amazing socks with sandals dad outfit — appropriately dubbed Grillmaster: 76.

Blizzard announced the return of the Summer Games last week. To help drum up excitement for the 2016 Summer Olympics last year, Blizzard introduced a special Summer Games event to Overwatch. The limited-time event allowed players to win exclusive cosmetic items and play a special soccer game that the developers called Lucioball. The sport was a hit, but fans left without their favorite items, as there was not a way to earn them once the promotion ended.

All summer skins available during the event last year are obtainable in this year’s Summer Games, as well as seven new ones. The 2016 competition did not allow players to unlock any special summer items with their earned credits, instead forcing them to get a lucky loot box. That changes this year, as you can pick and choose your favorite items using your currency for a discounted price. New items in this summer’s competition include a legendary skin for Junkrat and a skin for Mercy.

While Lucioball was a huge hit last summer, Blizzard apparently has not heard our cries to make it a permanent mode, but at least we have it for three weeks. The Rio map from 2016 is playable, along with a new Sydney, Australia, map. Lucio has also undergone some changes in the mode, as his ultimate ability no longer acts as a ball magnet. Instead, it enhances his normal abilities to give teams a brief advantage. Lucioball also has a competitive ranked mode dubbed, “Copa Lucioball.” Special sprays will be available for those who complete 10 placement matches, as well as for the top 500 players in each region.

Blizzard recently announced the formation of the Overwatch League, a first-of-its-kind esports organization that includes teams from Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Miami/Orlando, San Francisco, Shanghai, and Seoul. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft owns the Boston team. The competition will begin later this year.

Overwatch is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Update: The 2017 Summer Games event has started.

Overwatch 2 is coming to Steam, and more Blizzard games may soon be on the way
Kiriko in Overwatch 2

Blizzard Entertainment confirmed that Overwatch 2 will make its way to Steam on August 10, the same day its next season, titled Invasion, begins.

Overwatch 2 has been available on PC since its October 4, 2022, early access launch, but until now players had to download Blizzard's proprietary launcher, Battle.net, in order to play it. Although players will still need a Battle.net account that they can connect to Steam to play the game online, Overwatch 2 will be fully integrated into Valve's popular launcher, with support for things like achievements, compatibility with Steam friends lists, and Steam game invites. This launch is also timed to happen alongside the start of Season 6: Invasion, which will introduce the first batch of PvE story missions to the game.

I rated this summer’s biggest gaming showcases. This was the best one
An astronaut stands on the moon in Starfield.

Over the past month, it's been nice to see the game industry truly get back into the swing of things with its midyear showcase. While there was no E3 this year (and it doesn't look like there will be ones in the future), the likes of Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, Ubisoft, and Geoff Keighley all still held exciting live streams of their own that were filled with surprising announcements and entertaining moments. With the season's biggest gaming showcases seemingly over, I began to ask myself which one I enjoyed most. To figure out what makes an event like this work for me, I devised a rating system built on my own metrics and gave each one a grade.

I considered a variety of factors while looking at these showcases. The quality of the announcements is obviously very important, but so is the pacing of the stream and the relevancy of what's shown. I assigned each showcase a letter grade based on that, with some notes on what worked and what didn't. Here's where each show landed for me.

Summer Game Fest: our 10 favorite games we saw and played
A combat encounter in Armored Core 6

Digital Trends attended Summer Game Fest Play Days once again this year, as well as events held by Xbox and Ubisoft, and we were able to play demos of a variety of upcoming games from all corners of the industry. We played or saw a hands-off demo of over 30 games slated to release throughout the next year or so. From new entries in long-running series like Mortal Kombat or Armored Core to more quirky and experimental indies that are pushing the video game medium forward, there was a lot for us to like at this Summer Game Fest Play Days and its surrounding events.
Still, we talked and narrowed things down to our ten favorites so you could have a succinct list of some of the best-looking video games that are on the horizon. In no particular order- with the exception of our Game of the Show - here are our 10 favorite games we played last week as part of Summer Game Fest.
Game of the Show: Cocoon

It’s incredibly difficult to describe what makes Cocoon so special; it’s truly one of those games you need to actually play to understand. The atmospheric, insect-themed adventure game transported me to another world entirely during my demo session, letting me get fully lost in its sci-fi ambiance. Part of that is due to the astonishingly tight game design that had me traversing its visually striking environments and naturally solving puzzles with no explanation necessary. It’s an experience that stuck with me long after I put the controller down, and I wasn’t the only one. It was the one game on my peers’ tongues all weekend, as both press and content creators couldn’t stop praising it despite not being able to describe why. That makes it an easy pick for our game of the show, beating out some impressive Titans on this list. ~ Giovanni Colantonio
