PlatinumGames co-founder criticizes Nintendo Switch home menu’s poor design

PlatinumGames co-founder Hideki Kamiya, who holds a reputation for being brash with his opinions, criticized the home menu of the Nintendo Switch.

The Nintendo Switch, which took less than a year to surpass the sales of its predecessor, the Wii U, is on track to become one of the company’s most successful consoles. However, it has not been immune to issues, such as the controversial Joy-Con drift that has also affected the Nintendo Switch Lite.

Kamiya, known for his work as a director on games such as Bayonetta, Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, and Viewtiful Joe, has a problem with another aspect of the Nintendo Switch — the design of its home menu.

In a series of tweets, Kamiya expressed his frustrations with the Nintendo Switch home menu, particularly how all of the games installed in the console are lined up in a row with no way to sort the icons into folders. The menu is only capable of displaying 12 games at a time, with the rest hidden in an All Games section.

Kamiya also called out the sale section of the Nintendo Switch eShop, as there is no way to sort the games to make it easier to browse through them or discover titles.

Twitter users are agreeing with Kamiya, but it remains to be seen if Nintendo will listen to the criticism and finally roll out a revamped home menu and eShop for the Nintendo Switch. An update to improve the user interface for the console might not be a priority, but with Kamiya being a prominent figure in the industry, Nintendo might be forced to finally do something about the complaints.

Kamiya likely grew frustrated with the console’s home menu while working on Bayonetta 3, which was announced in The Game Awards 2017. Not much has been revealed about the Nintendo Switch exclusive, causing concern among fans of the Umbra Witch.

In early 2019, Nintendo of America’s senior product marketing manager Bill Trinen clarified that Bayonetta 3 was still in the works. While the game was not released within 2019, as speculated, Kamiya said on Twitter that its development is “on track,” without revealing a launch window for the highly anticipated game.

Pit shoots a bow.

Now that 2024 is here, the countdown is on. Rumors suggest that the Nintendo's Switch long-awaited successor is coming by the end of the year. While there's no official word from Nintendo on that yet, there's good reason to think it could happen. The current lineup of Switch games for 2024 is looking thin, so one could reasonably guess that developers may be off working on Switch 2 games by now.

As I begin to reflect on the Switch's wildly successful life span, I can't help but think  about what a bounty of games its given to Nintendo fans. I'm not just talking about Mario and Zelda games either. Most of Nintendo's franchises have been represented in some form, even if some were just rereleases or oddball spinoffs. We've seen Animal Crossing, Metroid, WarioWare, and even F-Zero get new games on the system. Nintendo left virtually no stone unturned this generation, as it turned just about every franchise it had into a cash cow.

If 2023 was our last full year with the Nintendo Switch, what a heck of a sendoff it got.

The rumor mill has been buzzing for months now, claiming that Nintendo plans to reveal and release its Switch successor next year. While that’s a rumor you should take with some skepticism, there’s good reason to believe it may happen. Nintendo reportedly showed off the system to developers behind closed doors at Gamescom this year, and the Switch’s current 2024 lineup feels like the final drop we’d get right before a new system. The Switch could be old news this time next year.

One of the best sci-fi games ever made is coming to Nintendo Switch next month
outer wilds nintendo switch indie world

During the November 2023 Indie World Showcase, it was revealed that many intriguing indie titles are coming to the Nintendo Switch over the next year. One of the show's biggest announcements was that Outer Wilds -- a critically acclaimed sci-fi game about exploring a solar system throughout repeating time loops -- is finally coming to the Nintendo Switch next month.

A Nintendo Switch port for Outer Wilds was first teased in 2021 and intended to be released during the summer of that year, but it did not make that release window. We did not hear much else about the port until now outside of a mention during one of publisher Annapurna Interactive's own showcases. An Indie World Showcase segment dedicated to the game showed some of its physics-based spacefaring gameplay in action on the Switch, and it seemed to look nice and run at a solid frame rate. Called Outer Wilds: Archaeologist Edition, this version of the game comes with the Echoes of the Eye DLC and will launch digitally on December 7. It will get a physical Switch release sometime next year.
