PlayStation 4 adds 3D Blu-ray support in the next console update

The next system software update for PlayStation 4 (v1.75) will add 3D Blu-ray support, as Sony confirms on the official PlayStation Twitter feed. The ability to play 3D Blu-rays is a feature currently available on the PlayStation 3 (added with update v3.5 back in 2010), so it was only a matter of time before the feature came to PS4.

Coming next week: PS4 system software update 1.75 adds 3D Blu-ray film support. Woo-hoo!

— PlayStation (@PlayStation) July 24, 2014

It is not known what else will be included in update v1.75 at this time, though the update — which is due to arrive sometime during the week ending August 1 — comes very soon after the July 22 release of update v1.74. The earlier update was minor, making general improvements to system software stability on the console., it seems that PS4 users will have 3D Blu-ray support before Xbox One users, as the Xbox update only has a vague August release.

Microsoft confirmed on July 18 that the Xbox One’s August update would include support for 3D Blu-rays. Assuming the PS4’s v1.75 patch arrives on time, the freshly announced feature will go live on Sony’s platform first.
