PlayStation Classic arrives this December with ‘Final Fantasy VII’ in tow

We’ve already seen mini plug-and-play systems from the likes of Nintendo and SNK, packing tons of retro games into a tiny system you can almost fit in your pocket, and Sony is the latest company to get in on the fun. The PlayStation Classic includes 20 of the original PlayStation’s best games, and it’s out this December.

Launching on December 3 for $100, the PlayStation Classic is nearly half as small as the original PlayStation, and it includes two controllers so you can play through its library with a friend. The system does not include an AC adapter, so you’ll need to purchase one separately in order to power it, and the included controllers aren’t the later DualShock type with analog sticks. They’re wired controllers, but it isn’t clear how long the cables will be. This was an issue with the NES Classic, and to a less extent, the SNES Classic, as they were far too short for most players’ setups.

The full game library has not been revealed yet, but it includes Final Fantasy VII, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, Wild Arms, and Jumping Flash. More games will be announced before the system launches, but if it continues to have such variation in genres, there should be something for just about everyone.

“Longtime fans will appreciate the nostalgia that comes with rediscovering the games they know and love, while gamers who might be new to the platform can enjoy the groundbreaking PlayStation console experience that started it all,” PlayStation worldwide marketing VP Eric Lempel said in the announcement.

The games announced thus far don’t go into very gruesome or violent territory, so it remains to be seen if the console will offer M-rated games as well. The original Metal Gear Solid launched on the platform back in 1998, and it’s often regarded as one of the greatest games of all time. These are the games we’d like to see make it on the PlayStation Classic, including Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and a Mega Man game or two, assuming Sony doesn’t want to focus most of the attention on its own titles.

The PlayStation Classic is now available for pre-order from select retailers in the United States and Canada, including GameStop.

I would buy a PlayStation Portal 2 if it had this one feature

I've had a bit of a love-hate relationship with the PlayStation Portal since it launched. Initially, I was disappointed by Sony's cloud streaming device. I was impressed with its screen and appreciated its DualSense integration, but its slimmeddown features made it feel like a cheap version of a good idea. I've since learned to find a use case for my PlayStation Portal that turned it into an integral part of my gaming setup. It's very imperfect, but that doesn't mean it's not useful.

Ever since its launch, I've been hoping for a refreshed follow-up, whether that be a Pro model or a true PlayStation Portal 2. It may be way too early to start discussing that considering that the Portal just launched in November 2023, but the promising device has enough glaring flaws that I'd welcome a fast-tracked successor. If Sony were to make a PlayStation Portal 2, though, there's one feature that's nonnegotiable: Bluetooth.

In its annual corporate strategy meeting, Sony debuted a video that featured a blink-and-you'll-miss-it concept for a redesigned game controller.

The presentation, which you can watch below, was dedicated to talking about Sony's future "creative entertainment vision," and included a lot of talk about the metaverse, mixed reality, and what it perceives as the future of game development. During a segment that showed off many futuristic-looking devices, you can see a circular controller working with a projected screen.

You can play this 2018 open-world hit for free if you have PlayStation Plus

If you somehow haven't played the 2018 open-world classic Red Dead Redemption 2 yet and you have a PlayStation Plus subscription, we have good news. PlayStation announced in a blog post Wednesday that the game will be available for free for the Plus program's Extra and Premium tiers.

Subscribers can play this massive hit, along with 12 other games, starting on May 21.  Users will also get access to Red Dead Online, the game's multiplayer experience that allows players to create their own character and mess around inside the world as they see fit -- from forming a group of outlaws to rob people on the road to hunting animals.
