PlayStation Plus members get ‘Until Dawn’ for free in July

Until Dawn - Launch Date Trailer | PS4
Sony’s PlayStation Plus program has been struggling to match the quality of Xbox Games With Gold over the last few months, but that will be changing in July. Subscribers will be able to download one of Telltale’s adventures, as well as a unique horror game starring some familiar faces.

Beginning Tuesday, all PlayStation Plus members will be able to download and play Until Dawn. A PlayStation 4 exclusive, the game offers a spin on the classic teen slasher genre by allowing you to change the story at nearly any moment. One false move or decision is all it takes to kill off your favorite characters, and you might recognize a few of them. Hayden Panettiere of Heroes and Nashville fame stars in the game, as does Rami Malek of Mr. Robot. For those who fall in love with the game, you can also pick up its virtual reality sibling, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood for less than $20 right now.

Also free on PlayStation 4 in July is Telltale’s Game of Thrones. Unlike the studio’s Walking Dead adaptation, this adventure series follows several of the characters from the HBO show, complete with the actors’ likenesses. The game received mixed reviews, with critics praising its contributions to the universe while noting its technical shortcomings.

PlayStation 3 owners also have a great lineup in July. First up is Tokyo Jungle, a bizarre exploration game that has you facing off against other animals in an abandoned city. You can also team up with other beasts you find to increase your chance of survival. PlayStation 3 owners will also get the fighting game Darkstalkers Resurrection, which contains remastered versions of Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge and Darkstalkers 3.

PlayStation Vita owners will get the creepy platformer Element4l, which first released on PC in 2013. While that version of the game received solid reviews, the Vita port has not been as well-received. Vita owners will also get Don’t Die, Mr. Robot, which is a cross-buy title for PlayStation 4, as well. The “dodge-em-up” arcade game also released on iOS last year.

What do you think of July’s PlayStation Plus lineup? How do you think it compares to Xbox Games With Gold? Let us know in the comments!

PlayStation State of Play returns this week, will feature 14 PS5 games
Three colorful PS5s float together in a line.

PlayStation will kick off the summer of digital video game reveal streams this week with a State of Play broadcast. The stream will take place at 3 p.m. PT on Thursday, May 30.

State of Play is one of Sony's primary livestream presentation formats. It tends to be slightly shorter than the company's flagship stream, the PlayStation Showcase. This State of Play is a significant one, though, as Sony's slate of first-party games for 2024 is entirely unknown at this stage. This stream should shed some light on what's coming later this year.

I would buy a PlayStation Portal 2 if it had this one feature
A Pulse Elite, DualSense, and PlayStation Portal sit on a table.

I've had a bit of a love-hate relationship with the PlayStation Portal since it launched. Initially, I was disappointed by Sony's cloud streaming device. I was impressed with its screen and appreciated its DualSense integration, but its slimmeddown features made it feel like a cheap version of a good idea. I've since learned to find a use case for my PlayStation Portal that turned it into an integral part of my gaming setup. It's very imperfect, but that doesn't mean it's not useful.

Ever since its launch, I've been hoping for a refreshed follow-up, whether that be a Pro model or a true PlayStation Portal 2. It may be way too early to start discussing that considering that the Portal just launched in November 2023, but the promising device has enough glaring flaws that I'd welcome a fast-tracked successor. If Sony were to make a PlayStation Portal 2, though, there's one feature that's nonnegotiable: Bluetooth.

3 new PS Plus games to play this Memorial Day weekend (May 24-27)
Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Memorial Day is coming up, so you're probably wondering what games you should play on your PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 over the holiday weekend. Lucky for you, a new batch of games were added to the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra game catalog earlier this week, and it brought plenty of games well worth your time. Three in particular stand out to me; download them today and try them out over the next few days.

The first is a Western from Rockstar Games that needs little introduction and is a must-play if you haven't experienced it yet. The next is an open-world game that kick-started a new series for Ubisoft and turns 10 next week. Finally, a retro PlayStation 1 game that just came to PlayStation Plus Premium offers up a good time if you enjoy sports or racing games.
