Pokémon Legends: Arceus trailer shows new ways to catch ’em all

With Pokémon Legends: Arceus set to release on January 28, Nintendo has decided to drop a whole lot of information on the game. In a 13-minute video posted to YouTube, nearly every aspect of the game is covered, from the previously revealed noble Pokémon to just how players will be able to capture Pokémon themselves.

Like any other Pokémon game, players will be able to catch the wild creatures by weakening them in a battle and tossing a Pokéball at them. However, the game’s open design will also let trainers take some clever approaches that bypass getting into a battle altogether.

By sneaking up on a Pokémon, players can throw a Pokéball at it and take it by surprise, raising their chance of catching the Pokémon in one go. Likewise, players can distract Pokémon if they know their eating habits. By throwing berries that a specific Pokémon likes, players can lower their guard even further, opening them up for a surprise attack.

These new strategies will let players conserve their Pokéballs, which may be more important in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. In the game, the essential tool for any Pokémon master has to either be crafted with resources scattered around the Hisui region or purchased. Without trainers to battle, though, players will only be able to get money from catching Pokémon and reporting back to the Survey Corps.

Likewise, today’s trailer outlined Pokemon Legends: Arceus‘ progression, which seems to be much less linear than previous entries in the franchise. Instead of tasking players with defeating Pokémon gym leaders, they have to complete missions for the Survey Corps to advance the game’s story. Taking a mission — or a request given by a resident of Jubilife Village — will add it to the player’s Arc Phone, which seemingly function’s like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild‘s Sheikah Slate.

Everything announced at February’s Pokémon Presents stream

Pokémon Presents | 2.27.2024

As has become a tradition in recent years, The Pokémon Company held a special live stream today in honor of Pokémon Day. Dubbed Pokémon Presents, the show gave us updates on the monster catching franchise, including some brand new game announcements. Though this year, it was a critical stream for the brand. It followed fan frustrations with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and the public's warm reception of Palworld, a competitor that has become a smash hit this year. The Pokémon Company needed to knock this one out of the park.

Netflix’s adorable new Pokémon show will warm your heart
Eevee sits on a tree stump in Pokemon Concierge.

No matter how old and cynical I get, there’s one constant in my life: I’m always delighted by Pokémon. Even in the franchise’s weakest moments, it rarely fails to make me smile. I’ve spent more time than I can count checking in with Pokémon Sleep this year, and even the middling Detective Pikachu Returns got some “Awws” from me. It’s the one piece of media that never ceases to take the tired adult in me and briefly turn him into a kid again.

Pokémon Concierge, a new four-part animated series available now on Netflix, understands that feeling more than any Pokémon game I’ve played in years. The gentle show takes place at a resort that exclusively caters to Pokémon in need of a break. Rather than focusing on flashy battles or lore-heavy stories about monsters that control space and time, the slice-of-life series simply understands the inherent joy of momentarily tuning out the real world with some adorable critters. It’s a sweet slice of stress-free escapism – one that the wider video game series could stand to take a few notes from.
The White Lotad
Pokémon Concierge is the latest project from Dwarf Studio, the animation studio behind Netflix’s positively precious Rilakkuma and Kaoru. Like that show, it features a stop-motion animation style that lends its good-natured world a level of hand-crafted, humanistic charm. Monsters like Hopip and Diglett appear as bright puppets lined with soft felt. They are stuffed animals come to life, and I couldn’t help wishing that I could squeeze them.

All new and returning Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet: The Indigo Disk
A Pokémon trainer holding a glowing Pokémon ball.

It's finally time, trainers. The last DLC for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, The Indigo Disk, will put a firm cap on the latest Pokédex. The DLC not only adds a handful of new critters to the list but also brings back a huge swath of returning favorites from past generations that make exploring Paldea a fresh experience all over again. Your new adventure will have you attempting to solve the mystery of an ancient myth in Kitakami, and perhaps these new Pokémon hold some answers.

Here are all the new Pokémon you can look forward to battling and catching, as well as the list of returning ones to see if your childhood favorite made the cut.
All new Pokémon
Just like in the Teal Mask DLC, this final expansion only adds four new Pokémon. Here's a breakdown of each:
Terapagos
This is the poster child for this DLC, and is going to play a major part of the game's story. Because of its importance, we don't know almost any details about it, including what type it is, except that it does have a Terastal Form.
Raging Bolt
