The original Pokémon Snap lands on Nintendo Switch later this month

Nintendo announced that the next Nintendo 64 title coming to its Nintendo Switch Online subscription service is Pokémon Snap. The predecessor to last year’s standout New Pokémon Snap will be available on the service starting on June 24.

Nintendo Switch Online is Nintendo’s subscription service similar to the new PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Not only does a membership permit users to play multiplayer games online, but it gives them a library of retro titles to play. Depending on your level of subscription, you can play NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, and Sega Genesis games. Each service is full of popular and hidden gems you may not have even heard of.

The latest of these retro additions is Pokémon Snap, a game where you have to capture Pokémon through the lens of a camera. This cult classic gained a following on the Nintendo 64 and garnered enough recent interest to receive a new Nintendo Switch series entry that we here at Digital Trends just love.

Pokémon Snap isn’t the only great Nintendo 64 title available through the Nintendo Switch Online program as more become available monthly. Past games added to the platform include Banjo-Kazooie, F-Zero X, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, and a few less popular games like Sin & Punishment and Winback: Covert Operations.

Pokémon Snap is joining the ranks of these currently playable Nintendo 64 games on Nintendo Switch Online for Expansion Pack tier members on June 24. It’s the first retro Pokémon game to be made available via the service.

There's enough room for improvement to warrant an entirely new console in the near future. Nintendo recently announced that we wouldn't see a Switch upgrade in the next fiscal year, meaning the absolute earliest we get a look at a new Nintendo console would be in late 2024.

Nintendo has announced Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, a new game coming out this July that tests players' speedrunning skills in NES classics like Super Mario Bros. and Metroid.

A successor of sorts to the NES Remix games on Wii U and 3DS, Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition draws its name from a gaming competition Nintendo held in 1990 and then briefly again in the 2010s. Its reveal trailer features previous Nintendo World Championship contestants musing about the event, only to learn that it's returning in video game form.

Nintendo confirms that Switch 2 and a June Direct are coming

Nintendo has finally confirmed two important things that people were speculating about. First off, we learned that another Nintendo Direct showcase will be taking place this June. More importantly, Nintendo finally confirmed that it is working on a Nintendo Switch successor and said we'd learn more about it within this fiscal year.

This all came from a statement by President Shuntaro Furukawa on Nintendo's corporate X (formerly Twitter) account. "We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015," the post confirms. "We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation."
