Police warn Raleigh locals of military cosplay at Rainbow Six Siege tournament

Rainbow Six: Siege – Raleigh Major Announcement

If a game is popular, you can bet that there are fans out there who cosplay as their favorite characters. If someone is cosplaying as Kratos from God of War or an Overwatch character, it’s very clear they are wearing a costume. But some cosplay is harder to differentiate from real life. Ahead of the Rainbow Six Siege Major esports tournament, the Raleigh Police Department in North Carolina notified local residents that they might see folks in military uniforms with fake weapons.

First reported by local newspaper The News & Observer, the Raleigh Police Department emailed those who own property near the Raleigh Convention Center to inform them of the event and potential cosplayers. The police attached photos of Rainbow Six Siege cosplayers. “As you can see in the provided pictures it attracts a lot of people that like to dress in very realistic looking military-type gear,” Raleigh Police said in the email.

A Raleigh police public affairs representative confirmed to Digital Trends that the email was sent purely as a precaution and that the images sent to property owners were from previous Rainbow Six Siege events.

The below image is an example of Rainbow Six Siege cosplay uploaded to Reddit. It’s most likely not the same image sent to Raleigh residents. While some cosplayers don’t go all out, others, as you can tell, really try to look the part.

Cosplayers carrying fake firearms will have them checked by security and tagged before gaining entrance to the convention center. The Raleigh Police Department made it clear that real firearms would not be brought inside by attendees. Ahead of the event, Ubisoft coordinated security measures, including metal detectors and bag checks, with the city and police department.

To be clear, cosplayers dress up as their favorite characters to show their enthusiasm for the games they love. It’s understandable why the Raleigh police would want to give residents a heads-up, though. Although North Carolina is an open-carry state, it could be alarming to see someone in military garb toting a realistic-looking rifle on the streets.

The 2019 Rainbow Six Siege Major is the first to be held in the United States. The tournament is already underway and will run through the weekend. Sixteen teams from around the world will battle for a $500,000 prize pool. If you’re interested in watching the tournament from home, it’s streaming all weekend on the Rainbow Six esports YouTube channel.

I doubled my Rainbow Six Extraction frame rate with 1 setting
Soldiers shooting aliens in Rainbow Six Extraction.

Rainbow Six Extraction turns the formula established by Rainbow Six Siege on its head, pitting you and and group of teammates against a horde of zombie-like enemies instead of against another team. The game comes with Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) built-in, but even with a supported graphics card, I've been using the in-engine dynamic resolution setting.

With this setting, I was able to double my frame rate, all with a surprisingly low impact on image quality. Those with the best graphics cards can use DLSS; for the rest of us, Rainbow Six Extraction's dynamic resolution is a dream come true.

Does Rainbow Six Extraction support split-screen play?
A squad shoots an alien in Rainbow Six Extraction.

For a highly competitive first-person shooter focused so much on tactics, positioning, and quick reflexes, it made sense why Rainbow Six Siege would not support split-screen play. It would obviously not work if the two people playing were on different teams, but even on the same team, being able to essentially see from two angles at once would defeat the purpose of the carefully crafted sightlines, emphasis on communication, and all the gadgets made to help and hinder spotting enemies. However, Rainbow Six Extraction is another type of game entirely. It still has all the same mechanics but is fully co-op now with no PvP elements at all.

With a squad of up to three Operators, all of which are taken right out of Rainbow Six Siege with a few tweaks, you will go on different missions with varied objectives that pit you against swarms of deadly Archaeans. This entire experience is designed with this squad-based composition in mind, not a lone wolf-style experience, even though you do have that option if you so choose. Getting your friends together is the intended way to go -- and certainly the most fun -- but what if you want to play with a friend in the same place? Split-screen games are not as common as they used to be, even in co-op-focused titles like Rainbow Six Extraction, so does this game let you play with a friend couch co-op style?

Is Rainbow Six Extraction cross-platform?
rainbow-six-quarantine-officially-renamed-to-extraction

Get ready, Operators, because a new threat has invaded the world of Rainbow Six. The Chimera parasite is back in Rainbow Six Extraction, and it is up to the familiar Operators from Rainbow Six Siege to take on a variety of missions to hopefully find a way to take back the land taken over by the Archaens. You can't do it alone, though, and just like in Siege, teamwork is essential. Your squad is cut down to just three, although you could go in solo. Doing so is nearly a death sentence when things get tough, though, so you will want as many friends watching your back as possible.

Being so heavily co-op focused, playing with your friends is the ideal way to experience Rainbow Six Extraction. There are matchmaking options as well, but nothing will be as effective as a team of friends who can trust one another to keep each other safe. However, not all of us might have the same systems to play Rainbow Six Extraction on. In that case, cross-platform support would be required to team up. If you need to know whether or not your friends on different platforms can help you fight these new alien threats, here's everything you need to know about whether or not Rainbow Six Extraction is cross-platform.
