PlayStation Plus’ most notable free April offerings come from Microsoft

Sony outlined all the new offerings PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers can expect in April; surprisingly, Microsoft is the company behind two of this month’s four offerings, Minecraft Legends, and the Overwatch 2 Mega Bundle.

On April 2, PS Plus can get those two things free of charge in addition to Immortals of Aveum and Skul: The Hero Slayer. Immortals of Aveum is a single-player shooter where players use magic instead of weapons. Although the thing it’s most notable for is flopping upon its release, Immortals of Aveum is still a solid shooter that you might have missed out on, and you should give it a shot now that you can get it through PS Plus. Meanwhile, Skul: The Hero Slayer is a tough 2D platformer roguelike that should entertain fans of that genre for quite some time.

The bonuses Microsoft is offering PS Plus subscribers this month are definitely the biggest draws, though. Minecraft Legends adapts Mojang’s popular survival crafting game into the real-time strategy genre. It’s surprisingly approachable despite the fact that RTS games are usually tough to get into. As such, those who own a PlayStation and not an Xbox should put the console wars aside for a bit and check it out if that idea sounds intriguing.

Overwatch 2 is a free-to-play shooter from Blizzard Entertainment, which Microsoft acquired last fall. Although the recent news of PvE story content being canceled is disappointing, PS Plus players can get the Mega Bundle for free and easily get into Overwatch 2’s PvP multiplayer experience. The Mega Bundle includes skins for Sigma, Symmetra, Sojourn, Junker Queen, Ramattra, Kiriko, Lifeweaver, Illari, and Mauga, in addition to five tier skips for any battle pass.

The Overwatch 2 Mega Bundle, Minecraft Legends, Skul: The Hero Slayer, and Immortals of Aveum will all be available for free to PS Plus Essential subscribers between April 2 and May 6.

Titanfall 2, one of the best shooters ever, will be free on PlayStation Plus

Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment first kicked off their relationship with Titanfall, a unique take on first-person shooters that introduced walking mechanical suits to the formula. That formula was perfected in Titanfall 2, and if you haven't played its excellent campaign or multiplayer mode yet, you can do so for free with PlayStation Plus next month.

Available beginning December 3 and running through January 6, Titanfall 2 will be available completely free to those with a PlayStation Plus subscription. It offers a more refined and deeper competitive multiplayer mode than the original game, with customizable Titan classes and tons of different weapons and abilities to use. It also has some of the best map design in any first-person shooter, with spots for snipers to pick off targets, wall-running opportunities, and flatter areas perfect for Titan-versus-Titan combat. Downloadable content like additional maps have all been free, so you'll be able to experience the full game with anyone else on PS4.

Ubisoft confirms Assassin’s Creed remakes are in the works

In a company interview with CEO Yves Guillemot posted on the Ubisoft website Thursday, the executive reveals that there are remakes of Assassin's Creed games in the works, although he doesn't specify which ones.

"Players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we've created in the past and modernize them," he says, implying that it could pertain to games made before Odyssey. "There are worlds in some of our older Assassin's Creed games that are still extremely rich."

Surfaced patent shows what an Xbox streaming console would’ve looked like

There have been a few Xbox devices that have never come to fruition, one of which was Keystone, a prototype for an affordable game streaming device you could hook up to your TV or monitor. Thanks to a surfaced patent, we've gotten an even closer look at what it would've potentially looked like.

The patent, first spotted by Windows Central, gives us a more complete view of the device. We've previously seen the Keystone in the flesh. Microsoft Gaming head Phil Spencer is known for hiding teases and interesting collectibles on the shelf in his office. In a 2022 X (formerly Twitter) post congratulating Bethesda on Fallout's 25th anniversary, you can see a small white device on the top shelf that's actually a Keystone prototype. Xbox told Digital Trends that it was a version of the device made before it decided to "refocus our efforts on a new approach.”
