PS Plus adds lots of great RPGs in September, but loses a former PS5 exclusive

Sony has provided its rundown of which games PlayStation Plus Premium and PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers can expect to be added on September 19 following the service’s massive price hike. The lineup is full of great RPGs from Japanese developers, like NieR Replicant and several Star Ocean games. The service will also lose Deathloop, which used to be a PS5 exclusive, on the same day.

PS Plus Premium and Extra will receive 20 new games this month, and five of them are games from Square Enix’s Star Ocean series. This makes it a great service to subscribe to if you want to prepare for November’s Star Ocean: The Second Story R. In general, it’s a great month for fans of RPGs, as games like NieR Replicant, Dragon’s Crown Pro, and Odin Sphere Leifthrasir are also coming to the subscription service. Here’s the full list of games coming to PS Plus on September 19:

  • 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
  • Odin Sphere Leifthrasir
  • NieR Replicant
  • Sid Meier’s Civilization VI
  • Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2
  • Unpacking
  • Planet Coaster: Console Edition
  • This War of Mine: Final Cut
  • Cloud Punk
  • Contra: Rogue Corps
  • Tails Noir
  • Call of the Sea
  • West of Dead
  • PAW Patrol The Movie: Adventure City Calls
  • Dragon’s Crown Pro
  • Star Ocean: First Departure R
  • Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
  • Star Ocean: The Last Hope – 4K and Full HD Remaster
  • Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness
  • Star Ocean: The Divine Force

While PS Plus gains a lot of games each month, it also loses some. A pretty notable PS5 game is going away this month: Deathloop. While the game has since come to Xbox Series X/S, Deathloop was formerly a PS5 exclusive game despite the fact that it came out after Microsoft had acquired publisher ZeniMax Media. This removal now makes Xbox Game Pass the only subscription service where you can play Deathloop. Here’s the full list of titles leaving PS Plus Premium and Extra this month:

  • Deathloop
  • Death end re;Quest 2
  • Chicory: A Colorful Tale
  • Nidhogg II
  • Through the Darkest of Times
  • Umbrella Corps
  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands
  • WatchDogs
  • WatchDogs 2

All of these games will come to or leave PS Plus Premium and Extra across PS4 and PS5 on September 19.

3 PS Plus free demos you should try this weekend (May 17-19)
Peter attacks enemies with the Symbiote Suit in Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

One of the most underrated features of PlayStation Plus Premium is the game trials that it offers. Although Sony does not put its AAA games on the service the day they release, it and several other third-party publishers offer up free demos that essentially give players full access to the game for a limited period of time. It's a great way to test a new game before you buy and it also gives you an excuse to try out a variety of different games this weekend without making the time commitment to beat them all. I looked through the full list of game trials that PlayStation Plus Premium offers and pinpointed three of the demos that are most worth your time.

The first is a two-hour demo for one of the PlayStation 5's biggest exclusives. The next will give you a two-hour taste of the latest fighting game in a long-running franchise. Finally, the one-hour trial of one of the year's best indies will get you hooked on the card-based roguelike that consumed my life for a bit.

PS5 Pro: news, rumored release date, price, and specs
A PS5 standing on a table, with purple lights around it.

Rumors are running rampant about a supposed PlayStation 5 Pro, or PS5 Pro for short. Just like we got a mid-generation upgrade with the PS4 Pro  during the last console cycle, many people are expecting PlayStation to release an incrementally more powerful machine to bridge the gap between the launch unit and an eventual PlayStation 6. Leaks have been coming out from some fairly credible sources, with a lot of juicy and very specific details about what a hypothetical PS5 Pro could look like. As credible as these sources may be, we do still need to take everything we see with some skepticism until Sony officially confirms that this system even exists. Until then, here are all the rumors out there regarding the PS5 Pro.
Rumored release window

A constant release window that all leaks have pointed to is sometime in Fall of 2024. That's right around the corner, probably in the September through November range, meaning we should be getting an official announcement on the console if that is indeed the plan. It appears that PS5 Pro dev kits are now in the hands of more developers, who have been asked that PS5 Pro-enhanced games be submitted for certification in August. These developments point toward a 2024 release.

3 underrated PS Plus games you should play this weekend (May 3-5)
The main character of Tales of Kenzera: Zau stands with two elemental items.

PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra have been around for almost two years, and during that time the subscription service has established itself as an ample competitor to Xbox Game Pass. That means there is a wealth of great games for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 owners to check out if they're looking for something to play this weekend. I think PS Plus subscribers should be looking toward some of the more underrated games in the subscription service this weekend too.

I have three particular picks in mind. The first is an enjoyable Metroidvania that came to PS Plus' game catalog when it launched just a couple of weeks ago and deserves a lot more attention than it's getting. After that, there's an action-platformer that pays homage to series like Ninja Gaiden that you should check out before it leaves the catalog. Finally, there's a PS2-era Star Wars game that fills the niche a recently canceled game would have.
