PS3 Claims 1 Million Folding@home Users

Sony Computer Entertainment says that more than 1 million PlayStation 3 owners have signed up for the Folding@home distributed computing project since the company rolled out its Folding@home client just under a year ago. Sony has repeatedly touted the raw computing power of the PS3, and claims that a network of about 10,000 PS3s can perform about the same about of distributed computing work as 100,000 typical PCs, and PS3 users make up about 74 percent of Folding@home’s processing power.

“Since partnering with SCEI, we have seen our research capabilities increase by leaps and bounds through the continued participation of Folding@home users,” said Stanford associate professor of chemistry and Folding@home lead Vijay Pande, in a release. “Now we have over one million PS3 users registered for Folding@home, allowing us to address questions previously considered impossible to tackle computationally, with the goal of finding cures to some of the world’s most life-threatening diseases. We are grateful for the extraordinary worldwide participation by PS3 and PC users around the globe.”

Folding@home is a distributed computing project dedicated to understanding protein folding and (importantly) misfolding, and how these processes are related to particularly medical conditions and diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.

The Folding@home client is a free download for any PS3; client software is also available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux distributions.

The new 1TB PS5 has more usable storage space than the Xbox Series X

It's out with the old and in with the new for the PlayStation 5, as Sony has replaced its old 2020 model with a slimmer redesign. The new model fixes one of its predecessor's biggest issues thanks to its 1TB storage upgrade. As is the case with any console, not all of that space is actually usable. In testing our own review unit, we've been able to break down just how much of an upgrade it actually is.

When popping into the storage menu, the new PS5 says it has 848GB of space. You'll find that some of that is already taken up by a few things, including Astro's Playroom, which comes installed on the system out the box. That'll leave you with 830.6GB, though you can delete the game to get 11.06GB back. The only thing you can't cut is 6.33GB of system files. All in all, that means you have roughly 842.2GB of usable space.

If you've been patiently waiting for Baldur's Gate 3 to arrive on PlayStation 5 while PC players got an early start, you won't have to wait much longer, unlike Xbox players. By now you don't need us to tell you just how amazing this game has shaped up to be, and are more than likely already prepared with your choice of character and just waiting for the green light to finally dive into this massive CRPG. Baldur's Gate 3 will come out for all PS5 players officially on September 6 at 9 a.m. PT / 12 p.m. ET. Anyone who purchased the Digital Deluxe Edition gets 72 hours of early access, meaning you can start playing on September 3 instead.
