PlayStation 4’s online gaming is free for an entire weekend

All PlayStation 4 owners will be able to take part in online multiplayer this coming weekend, regardless of whether or not they pay for a PlayStation Plus subscription, according to Sony. Starting on Friday, March 20 at 12:01am Pacific and running through Sunday, March 22 at 11:59 pm, anyone with a PS4 can log on to PSN and partake in online multiplayer with friends and strangers.

Online play with the PS4 generally requires a PS Plus subscription, which can be purchased for various chunks of time at variable prices; one year currently costs $50 on Amazon.

The promotion is well-timed with the release of Battlefield Hardline on March 17. Jump in to intense firefights in the streets of Miami in Hardline, fight for the future of Earth in the recent indie Helldivers, or see if you can find an even sillier way to take on Destiny‘s hardest raid than the current record of solo with no bullets fired.

Sony is off to a fairly strong start in 2024, with games like The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Rise of the Ronin, and Stellar Blade, but the PS5's lineup for the back half of the year is still shrouded in mystery. Sony has confirmed that the May 2024 State of Play presentation will start airing live today at 3 p.m. PT. According to the PlayStation Blog, it will be a "30+ minute show," so set some time aside to watch it tomorrow afternoon.

PlayStation State of Play returns this week, will feature 14 PS5 games

PlayStation will kick off the summer of digital video game reveal streams this week with a State of Play broadcast. The stream will take place at 3 p.m. PT on Thursday, May 30.

State of Play is one of Sony's primary livestream presentation formats. It tends to be slightly shorter than the company's flagship stream, the PlayStation Showcase. This State of Play is a significant one, though, as Sony's slate of first-party games for 2024 is entirely unknown at this stage. This stream should shed some light on what's coming later this year.

PS Plus is is adding more games than usual to its game library in June. The service will get 14 games, with some rolling out on June 4. That list includes AEW Fight Forever, Tomb Raider: Legend, and five PlayStation VR2 games.

Sony's PS Plus subscription service has been hit-or-miss since its rebrand a few years back. Though its struggled to put out consistent content, especially retro games, its June lineup shows Sony making its biggest push yet to court subscribers. And its bringing some heavy hitters along to help with that.
