Tactics and teamwork reign in Rainbow Six: Siege multiplayer, beta coming Sept. 24

New details on Rainbow Six: Siege emerged out of Ubisoft’s E3 press conference on Monday afternoon, where the publisher gave fans a peek into the game’s story, a glimpse at a new multiplayer mode, as well as details on an upcoming beta.

Actress Angela Basset will offer her voice and likeness to the character Six, the leader of Rainbow Team — the elite anti-terror unit which the player is a part of. Bassett took to the stage alongside host Aisha Tyler to convey her excitement at playing Six, and tell audiences about the game’s story. In the world of Rainbow Six: Siege, home-grown terror is a real and present threat, and Rainbow Team has been tapped to hunt down these cells and put an end to their plans.

Beyond this, single-player details were sparse, but Ubisoft gave fans a look at what to expect from the multiplayer content. A demo for Terrorhunt, a new multiplayer mode based on the classic Rainbow Six Terrorist Hunt mode, saw a team of players taking on a terror cell that has planted a bomb in a city building. Beginning their assault on the roof, the team ascended the side of the structure on ropes, and crashed through windows. From there, the team was in constant chatter, taking tactical formations to flank and outsmart enemies, and protect each other while searching for and disarming a bomb.

It’s clear from the demo that communication and strategy are key to success and survival. Taking a few shots will down a player’s character, and being reckless or imprecise with movement and cover could spell disaster for one’s entire team. This sort of highly tactical, methodical gameplay has us excited; it’s not often a large, multiplayer console shooter takes teamwork so seriously. Luckily, we’ll all get a chance to try both PVP and Terrorhunt in Rainbow Six: Seige out soon, as a beta for the game begins on September 24.

With the recent reveal of Far Cry 6's release date, as well as details about the game, Ubisoft has already played one of its big cards before its E3 2021 event, Ubisoft Forward. Despite that, the publisher seemingly has more to show off, with a new stream set for this weekend.

While Ubisoft hinted via its Forward schedule that some surprise announcements are in store, a few big titles are already set to appear, including world premiere trailer footage of the freshly renamed Rainbow Six Extraction. Here's how to watch the show, which kicks off E3 today, and what we know will (and won't) be at it.
When is the Ubisoft Forward?
Ubisoft Forward takes place later today. The preshow starts at 11 a.m. PT/2 p.m. ET, while Ubisoft's main event starts at noon PT/3 p.m. ET. A post-show is confirmed for 1 p.m. PT/4 p.m. ET, meaning the show will have a total runtime of three hours.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Quarantine now has a new name, as revealed by Ubisoft. It is now called Rainbow Six Extraction, and will be shown during the E3 Ubisoft Forward event later this month.

This news comes by way of the game's official Twitter account, which featured a short video revealing the game's new name and what to expect from its showcase during E3. The team at Ubisoft was careful not to spoil anything about the game ahead of the Ubisoft Forward event, but the game's producer, Antoine Vimal du Monteil, did note that it has "grown a lot" since its announcement in 2019.

Ubisoft announced that it'll reveal gameplay for the next entry in the Rainbow Six franchise at its E3 showcase this year.

According to a blog post, Ubisoft's E3 Forward presentation will include "world premiere gameplay and trailers revealing this brand-new co-op title for the first time." The upcoming game was formerly titled Rainbow Six Quarantine before being renamed. The game's new title hasn't been revealed yet and will likely debut at Ubisoft's Forward presentation. Rainbow Six Quarantine was originally going to release before March 2021 but was delayed along with Far Cry 6 to Ubisoft's current fiscal year, spanning from April 2021 to March 2022.
