The real reason most of us play Ratchet & Clank games is for the weapons. Sure, Insomniac Games does awesome things with story and gameplay as well, but Ratchet’s diverse and oftentimes bizarre arsenal is the beating heart of that series. The latest collection of gameplay videos for the upcoming Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One is a testament to that fact, with today bringing the first of four looks at the game running through the new toys you’ll be playing with when it launches on October 18.

You get to see four of the co-op action game’s new weapons doing their thing. The Combuster is a pistol-sized(-ish) ray gun-looking thing that fires bright-yellow balls of death at a reasonably fast rate. After that is the Darkstar Fission Tether, which looks like some sort of electricity-based weapon that can be used by co-op players to create a sort of energy carpet that takes out any enemies you can trap inside it. The Warmonger is gratuitous defined, a chaingun-like delivery system for salvos of rockets. And finally, the Thundersmack… well… it pretty much lives up to its name. You smack your enemies. With thunder.

The video was posted today on the PlayStation Blog. There are three more coming soon too, so keep watching!

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart developer breaks down the most impressive tech feats
Ratchet tethers through a portal in Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart.

With the release of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, the next generation of gaming is truly here. Despite the fact that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X were released last November, we hadn’t really seen the extent of either console's capability until now.

While games like Returnal have shown us the unique joys of the DualSense controller, Rift Apart takes greater advantage of the PS5’s techier side. Most notably, it utilizes the system’s hyperfast SSD to virtually eliminate load times as Ratchet jumps between dimensions. It’s an absolute spectacle that turns the game into a surprising technical powerhouse.

All pocket dimension locations in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart

The main feature of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart are the titular rifts. The ability to seamlessly jump between dimensions without so much as a loading screen is what makes this game only possible on the PlayStation 5. While this mechanic is tied into the plot and used to fun effect, Insomniac didn't just limit showing the idea of jumping into new dimensions to story moments but also applied them to pocket dimensions.

Pocket dimensions are essentially challenge areas hidden around each of the game's planets. By finding and interacting with them, you will be transported into a new area where you must complete a unique platforming challenge for a special armor piece as a reward. There are 12 total pocket dimensions in the game, which you can spot as big purple crystals floating in the air, and while you only need to find one to earn the More Than Lint trophy, you will want to still want to do them all for the armor pieces you'll get. If you're on the hunt for these pocket dimensions, here's where you can find them all and what rewards you will earn.
