Fan-crafted Resident Evil 2 remake gets a boost from Unreal Engine 4

RESIDENT EVIL 2 REBORN - Gameplay Trailer Unreal Engine 4 (InvaderGames, July 2015) - PART 1/2
Capcom’s classic survival horror game Resident Evil 2 boasts a gory new coat of paint in an Unreal Engine 4-powered fan remake from Italian indie developer InvaderGames, and a public release is coming soon.

Resident Evil 2 Reborn turns Capcom’s cinematic horror game into a third-person shooter akin to Resident Evil 4, featuring over-the-shoulder aiming and other gameplay improvements. Borrowing HD textures from Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, InvaderGames’ remake also refines Resident Evil 2‘s health system, soundtrack, and character dialog for a modern take on a highly regarded classic.

Resident Evil 2 Reborn also features improved lighting effects, obscuring the game’s army of flesh-eating zombies behind a constant veil of darkness. Players must now use a flashlight and ambient lighting in order to spot undead creatures, adding to the game’s tense atmosphere.

While many Resident Evil series entries have received remakes for modern consoles, Resident Evil 2 is a conspicuous exception. Launched for the original PlayStation in 1998, Resident Evil 2 was later ported to contemporary platforms like the Nintendo 64 and Sega Dreamcast with little in the way of gameplay improvements or remastered content. An unmodified version of 1998’s Resident Evil 2 is available via the PlayStation Network as a PSone Classics release.

Capcom has issued numerous upgraded versions of the original Resident Evil since its initial 1996 release, including a modified port for the Nintendo DS and a significantly overhauled remake for the Nintendo GameCube. The GameCube edition recently resurfaced on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as Resident Evil HD Remaster, boasting upgraded textures and a 1080p presentation.

Capcom recently announced that Resident Evil Zero is due for a similar upgrade in 2016 with remastered ports for the PlayStation 4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.

Resident Evil 2 Reborn is currently in the alpha stages of development, and a free downloadable version for PC platforms is due to launch this summer.

The replay quotient of the Resident Evil 4 remake is already incredibly high. Aside from attempting the game on higher difficulties, odds are you will miss at least some of the collectibles or guns during your first run. Still, many people will want more, and the included extras like costumes and special weapons can only extend a single-player game's life so much. This is where mods come in. From new models and outfits to reworked mechanics, mods can breathe new life into this survival horror masterpiece.
How to install Resident Evil 4 remake mods
Modding for the Resident Evil 4 remake is only really available for the PC version, and is most easily done through the popular Nexus Mod Manager. This safe, reliable tool allows you to browse, download, and apply mods with ease. Resident Evil 4 shows that a remake doesn’t need to be completely faithful
Leon holding a gun in Resident Evil 4.

Back when Capcom announced its Resident Evil 2 remake, I was ecstatic. This was a game I had missed when it first came out, and it was an important part of a series I had grown to love. However, its outdated gameplay meant it was close to impossible to go back comfortably, and its age meant it was tough to play legally. If I wanted to play Resident Evil 2, I would either have to head towards emulation (which I have no patience for) or rely on the remake. The latter, as it turned out, was ideal.

You’ll find remakes across all of media, so the idea isn’t anything new. But video games are in the middle of a remake boom with studios spending a lot of money on taking existing IP and looking backward at a seemingly more frantic pace. Cynically, it’s just another way they can make money off of a beloved series, but it’s also a way to bring older, important games to newer audiences.

The fact that Resident Evil 4 remake retains the original's ability to mix horror with campy fun is one of its greatest aspects. One moment you will be gripping your controller for dear life as a swarm of bloodthirsty villagers relentlessly pursue you, and the next Leon's making quips and performing suplexes. There was one small fun diversion in the original game that has been expanded and improved for the remake, which is the optional Shooting Gallery. This time there are multiple of these safe spaces to hone your aim, but also a fully developed system of challenges, scores, and, best of all, rewards. If you want to take a breather from all the horrors that await you in Resident Evil 4 remake, here's where you can find all the Shooting Galleries, what you can win, and some helpful tips.
Shooting Gallery locations

There are a total of five locations across all 16 Chapters of Resident Evil 4 remake, and they all are within the safety of a Merchant zone. That means you could technically wait and only visit the final one to take on all the challenges there. Here's where you can find each individual Shooting Gallery in order of appearance:
