Game Pass adding Resident Evil 7, losing Red Dead Redemption 2

Microsoft announced the latest batch of games coming to its Game Pass service, and while some heavy-hitters are joining the subscription service over the next few weeks, a few major titles will be leaving in September.

The biggest addition is Resident Evil 7, which will be available on PC and Xbox One on September 3. In our review, we called Capcom’s survival horror game “tense, gory, hilarious, and scary in all the right ways.”

Microsoft Flight Simulator landed on the service earlier today, giving PC owners a taste of the open skies.

A pair of titles that popped up in Tuesday’s Nintendo’s Indies broadcast are coming as well. Spiritfarer, a death-positive management game that’s receiving rave reviews, is available today on PC and console. Last year’s psychedelic, ’90s OS simulator Hypnospace Outlaw is coming on August 27.

Other standouts include the first chapter of Dontnod’s Life is Strange follow-up Tell Me Why and the upcoming Battletoads remake, which will launch on PC and Xbox One on August 20.

This time around, none of the games offered are exclusive to Xbox One. Most of the new titles will be available for both PC and console subscribers. Crossing Souls, Darksiders: Genesis, and Crusader Kings III will only be available on PC.

Despite the influx of new titles, some major games are leaving the service soon. Most notably, Red Dead Redemption 2 will leave consoles on September 7. Rockstar’s Wild West epic only joined the service back in May.

NBA 2K20 will no longer be available to Xbox One owners on September 1, while Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 HD leaves at the end of the month. Subscribers can still purchase the games for 20% off until they leave the service.

Microsoft continues to ramp up the value proposition for Game Pass ahead of the Xbox Series X launch. Earlier this month, the company announced that Project xCloud will be available to Game Pass Ultimate subscribers starting September 15. The cloud service will launch with over 100 games, including Destiny 2 and Minecraft Dungeons.

Frostpunk 2 will come to PC Game Pass when it launches this year
A city in Frostpunk 2.

11bit Studios confirmed that Frostpunk 2 will be released on PC sometime during the first half of 2024 and will be on Game Pass from day one alongside the first full gameplay reveal for the highly anticipated survival city-builder.

The new gameplay trailer for Frostpunk 2 is just over two minutes long and gives the public a first look at the game's city-managing mechanics. Frostpunk 2's gameplay significantly departs from its predecessor in some ways, as it's more focused on the macro management of a city that's survived an apocalypse rather than the micromanaging of resources for basic survival. After getting an extended hands-off look at Frostpunk 2 in action last year, I said it "scales its challenges and gameplay systems up while also holding on to the ethical dilemmas and emphasis on consequences that made the original so great (and depressing.)."

These Activision Blizzard games need to come to Xbox Game Pass this year
Sekiro easy mode mod FromSoftware Souls games gameplay difficulty

In October 2023, Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and by the end of the year, the latter company's CEO had departed. Now, this will be the year where we’ll see how Activision Blizzard functions when fully integrated into Microsoft. The most immediate change for those who play games will likely be Activision Blizzard titles coming to Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft’s subscription service.

Microsoft and Activision have explained that because of the tribulations the acquisition encountered, it was impossible to have Xbox Game Pass additions prepared almost immediately after the acquisition, as it did with ZeniMax Media. In the coming months, I expect we’ll finally start to see Activision Blizzard games trickle onto the service, even if we shouldn't expect it from this week's Developer_Direct. As Activision Blizzard is one of the oldest game publishers out there, having released hundreds of games, there are plenty of titles to choose from. I’ve cherry-picked the ones I want to see most.

Xbox Game Pass kicks off 2024 by adding an all-time great remake
Mr.X pulling open a door in Resident Evil 2.

The new year has just begun, and Microsoft has announced the first group of games coming to Xbox Game Pass this year. Throughout the first half of January, Microsoft's game subscription service is set to receive eight new games. Most notably, Capcom's excellent Resident Evil 2 remake from 2019 joins Xbox Game Pass on January 16.

First released nearly five years ago on January 25, 2019, Resident Evil 2 set a new standard for horror remakes. It completely reimagined the original fixed-camera PlayStation 1 horror game as a tense third-person shooter with an intimate over-the-shoulder camera, while still retaining the core elements that made the original great. The influence of Resident Evil 2's remake can be felt not just in subsequent Resident Evil games, but in titles from other developers, like Alan Wake 2, Dead Space, and the upcoming Alone in the Dark remake.
