‘Resident Evil HD,’ ‘Transformers: Devastation’ free with PlayStation Plus in October

PlayStation Plus Free PS4 Games Lineup October 2016
Sony revealed its October lineup of PlayStation Plus freebies, announcing that service subscribers will be able to download PS4 versions of Resident Evil HD Remaster and Transformers: Devastation free of charge starting next week.

Other highlights hitting PlayStation Plus next month include Ubisoft’s groundbreaking simulation title From Dust and Actual Sunlight, an interactive short story for the PS Vita.

Released for the PlayStation 4 in 2015, Resident Evil HD Remaster is a visually updated version of Capcom’s classic survival horror game Resident Evil. Incorporating remastered visuals from a previously issued GameCube remake of Resident Evil, the PS4 edition boasts 1080p visuals, widescreen support, and a new control scheme.

Transformers: Devastation, also released in 2015, is a frantic hack-and-slash action game based on the popular animated series and film franchise. Developed by Bayonetta series creator Platinum Games, Transformers: Devastation features an original storyline and five playable Autobot characters, including Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Grimlock, Sideswipe, and Wheeljack.

The PlayStation 4 versions of Resident Evil HD Remaster and Transformers: Devastation will be available as free downloads for PlayStation Plus subscribers throughout the month of October.

PlayStation 3 owners with an active PlayStation Plus subscription will soon be able to get their hands on From Dust, a terrain-shifting simulation game from Another World creator Eric Chahi. Also up for grabs for PS3 owners next month is Mad Riders, a motocross racing game helmed by Dead Island series developer Techland.

Sony closes out October’s PlayStation Plus lineup with a pair of free digital releases for PS Vita owners, including the narrative-driven adventure game Actual Sunlight and Code: Realize — Guardian of Rebirth, a visual novel from Idea Factory and Aksys Games.

All of October’s featured PlayStation Plus games will be available as free downloads for subscribers when the PlayStation Store updates on October 4.

3 PS Plus free demos you should try this weekend (May 17-19)
Peter attacks enemies with the Symbiote Suit in Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

One of the most underrated features of PlayStation Plus Premium is the game trials that it offers. Although Sony does not put its AAA games on the service the day they release, it and several other third-party publishers offer up free demos that essentially give players full access to the game for a limited period of time. It's a great way to test a new game before you buy and it also gives you an excuse to try out a variety of different games this weekend without making the time commitment to beat them all. I looked through the full list of game trials that PlayStation Plus Premium offers and pinpointed three of the demos that are most worth your time.

The first is a two-hour demo for one of the PlayStation 5's biggest exclusives. The next will give you a two-hour taste of the latest fighting game in a long-running franchise. Finally, the one-hour trial of one of the year's best indies will get you hooked on the card-based roguelike that consumed my life for a bit.

You can play this 2018 open-world hit for free if you have PlayStation Plus
Arthur Morgan walks into a burning house in Red Dead Redemption 2.

If you somehow haven't played the 2018 open-world classic Red Dead Redemption 2 yet and you have a PlayStation Plus subscription, we have good news. PlayStation announced in a blog post Wednesday that the game will be available for free for the Plus program's Extra and Premium tiers.

Subscribers can play this massive hit, along with 12 other games, starting on May 21.  Users will also get access to Red Dead Online, the game's multiplayer experience that allows players to create their own character and mess around inside the world as they see fit -- from forming a group of outlaws to rob people on the road to hunting animals.

3 PlayStation Plus games you need to play this weekend (May 10-12)
Miles Morales in Spider-Man outfit fending off crime.

The weekend is here, so you probably want to sit back and relax by playing some video games. If you're subscribed to PlayStation Plus Premium or Extra on PS4 or PS5, then there are tons of fantastic titles to choose from in the subscription service's vast game catalog. It's a lot to sift through, so I've handpicked three titles I think you should check out if you haven't played them already.

One is a superhero game that launched alongside the PS5 and can be beaten within a weekend. The next is an eerie indie Metroidvania that just got added to PS Plus Extra when it launched on May 9. Finally, there's a sequel to a fantastic roguelike (not Hades 2) where you play as a new person in the same family every time you die.
