Rockstar Reveals GTA: Chinatown Wars

Rockstar Reveals GTA: Chinatown Wars

You might think Rockstar would be a little bit tired after the years-long gestation period for Grand Theft Auto IV, but as it turns out, everyone’s favorite controversial developer already has another GTA bun in the oven. At Nintendo’s E3 press conference, Nintendo reps announced GTA: Chinatown, which will bring a whole new storyline to Liberty City on the Nintendo DS.

Info on the storyline has been sparse, but then, that’s never been the main attraction for GTA games. According to Rockstar, Chinatown will require players to “uncover the truth behind an epic tale of crime and corruption within the Triad crime syndicate.” And hey, probably blow some stuff up along the way.

More interestingly, Rockstar promised that the title will make use of the DS’s touch screen, although with all the gunning and driving, we’re not quite sure how yet. As the first GTA title on the DS, it will also make use of a custom game engine specifically for the system.

The title, developed by Rockstar Leeds in conjunction with Rockstar North, will debut in North America and Europe this winter.

5 video game reveals we’re dying to see this summer
Samus Aran stands tall in Metroid Prime Remastered.

It’s the most exciting time of year to be a video game fan, as almost every notable video game publisher is getting ready to drop new showcases highlighting upcoming games. Across Summer Game Fest, Xbox Games Showcase, and the next Nintendo Direct, we’ll have a ton of new video games to be excited about. Although titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 have already been confirmed for some of these shows, the fun part of this summer gaming marathon is predicting what’s going to show up.

There are five announcements in particular that I’m hoping to see during this summer’s showcases. From games that have leaked, but not been officially confirmed to titles announced years ago that have gone dark since, each of these will likely jump to the top of my personal most anticipated list if they are shown off during a showcase this summer. With some luck, they’ll be out not long after.

I’m already loving Star Wars: Hunters’ cast of misfit weirdos
Grozz and more heroes run forward in Star Wars: Hunters.

Every year is a big year for Star Wars these days considering its power across every form of media, but that’s especially true in 2024. In addition to Disney+ shows like The Acolyte and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, the sci-fi franchise is getting some high-profile games this year. The headliner is Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws, but there’s another canon game coming before then. Star Wars: Hunters launches on June 4, bringing the series into free-to-play mobile and Nintendo Switch territory.

Though Star Wars has had plenty of multiplayer shooters before, Hunters is doing something a little different. It’s a 4v4 hero shooter that draws some clear inspiration from Overwatch. It’s not a fan service dream filled with familiar characters either. Instead, it introduces a wholly original cast of heroes that draw on the series’ deep well of alien races and factions. It may be the most inventive Star Wars game in years. But will that be enough to win over mobile and free-to-play skeptics?
