PlayStation Plus serves up free 'Furi,' 'Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell' in July

PlayStation Plus Free PS4 Games Lineup July 2016
PlayStation Plus subscribers will soon receive a free copy of the PlayStation 4 version of Volition’s superheroic, open-world action game Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell, along with a varied collection of freebies for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita.

Service subscribers will also get early access to Paragon, an upcoming multiplayer online battle arena game developed by Gears of War series creator Epic Games.

Starting on July 5, PlayStation 4 owners with an active PlayStation Plus subscription will get free access to Gat Out of Hell, a 2015 spinoff in Volition’s Saints Row series. Taking place after the events of Saints Row IV, Gat Out of Hell puts players in control of returning series stars Johnny Gat and Kinzie Kensington as they take on a series of surreal open-world missions.

Like Saints Row IV, Gat Out of Hell equips players with superpowers that allow them to fly long distances and take out groups of enemies in a swift, violent fashion. Players who complete Gat Out of Hell‘s campaign will get a glimpse at storyline elements that introduce Volition’s recently announced series reboot Agents of Mayhem.

Also free for PlayStation 4 owners next month is Furi, an action game that mixes melee combat with elements from “bullet hell”-styled shooters. Furi will make its PlayStation Network debut on July 5 as a free download via PlayStation Plus.

July’s PlayStation Plus lineup also offers a pair of free PlayStation 3 games, including Ubisoft’s Western-themed first-person shooter Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood and Fat Princess, a real-time strategy game that originally premiered in 2009.

PlayStation Vita owners, meanwhile, can look forward to a free copy of Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines, a console-style role-playing game from Phantasy Star Portable series developer Alfa System. July’s final PlayStation Plus game is Prince of Persia: Revelations, a PSP port of 2004’s Prince of Persia: Warrior Within.

All of July’s free PlayStation Plus games will be available for download when the PlayStation Store updates on July 5.

3 PlayStation Plus games you need to play this weekend (May 10-12)
Miles Morales in Spider-Man outfit fending off crime.

The weekend is here, so you probably want to sit back and relax by playing some video games. If you're subscribed to PlayStation Plus Premium or Extra on PS4 or PS5, then there are tons of fantastic titles to choose from in the subscription service's vast game catalog. It's a lot to sift through, so I've handpicked three titles I think you should check out if you haven't played them already.

One is a superhero game that launched alongside the PS5 and can be beaten within a weekend. The next is an eerie indie Metroidvania that just got added to PS Plus Extra when it launched on May 9. Finally, there's a sequel to a fantastic roguelike (not Hades 2) where you play as a new person in the same family every time you die.

Helldivers 2 PC woes prove that PlayStation needs an online overhaul
The PlayStation Store on the Sony InZone M9.

It's been a rough few days for Sony. After a plan to implement mandatory PlayStation Network accounts for Helldivers 2 players on PC went haywire, one would imagine that the company is having a lot of talks behind closed doors right now. If there's one thing I hope Sony takes away from everything, it's that PlayStation's online services need a 2.0 revamp.

It all kicked off when Sony announced that all Helldivers 2 players on PC would be required to have a PSN account to play and would no longer be optional. The backlash was instant, but not for unfounded reasons. Many players expressed concern about living in a country where they couldn't even create a PSN account, leading to the eventual backpedaling of the decision.

If you’re not using PlayStation Stars, you’re missing out
Three phone screens with the PlayStation Stars app.

I wouldn't blame you if you forgot PlayStation Stars existed. In fact, I would guess the majority of people out there have no idea what that even is, but PlayStation's reward program deserves more attention than it's getting.

Launched in the summer of 2022, PlayStation Stars is a program meant to reward players for engaging with the PlayStation ecosystem. You can take on challenges to earn digital collectibles and, more importantly, coins that can be redeemed for games, store credit, and some premium in-game currencies.
