Shadowrun Returns latest classic RPG to seek Kickstarter resurrection

Kickstarter is fast becoming the patron saint of old-school RPGs. Wasteland 2 has more than doubled its intended goal of raising $900,000 to develop the post-apocalyptic sequel. Yet the people are hungry for more! Harebrained Schemes is ready to give it to them. The studio headed by Jordan Weisman has started up a campaign to bring back another cult classic from 20 years ago: His very own Shadowrun.

The studio opened its fundraiser to developer new sequel Shadowrun Returns on Sunday with the goal of raising $400,000. The game is planned for Android and iOS mobile devices as well as PCs. Like the Shadowrun video games of the ‘90s, Returns will be a 2D single-player game with turn-based combat with a bent on character development and strategy. This game will apparently hew close to the Super Nintendo Shadowrun created by Data East, with similar interactive conversations.

In addition to Weisman, who created the original Shadowrun pen-and-paper role-playing game back in 1989, seven of the other original writers that worked on the game will be helping with Returns.

Weisman says that he’s been working to bring Shadowrun back to video games for awhile, but licenses associated with the franchise still held by Microsoft after its botched attempt to turn the series into a shooter made it difficult for major publishers to get involved.

With 24 days to go, Harebrained has already raised

In a company interview with CEO Yves Guillemot posted on the Ubisoft website Thursday, the executive reveals that there are remakes of Assassin's Creed games in the works, although he doesn't specify which ones.

"Players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we've created in the past and modernize them," he says, implying that it could pertain to games made before Odyssey. "There are worlds in some of our older Assassin's Creed games that are still extremely rich."

Surfaced patent shows what an Xbox streaming console would’ve looked like
An Xbox Series X sits next to both Series S models.

There have been a few Xbox devices that have never come to fruition, one of which was Keystone, a prototype for an affordable game streaming device you could hook up to your TV or monitor. Thanks to a surfaced patent, we've gotten an even closer look at what it would've potentially looked like.

The patent, first spotted by Windows Central, gives us a more complete view of the device. We've previously seen the Keystone in the flesh. Microsoft Gaming head Phil Spencer is known for hiding teases and interesting collectibles on the shelf in his office. In a 2022 X (formerly Twitter) post congratulating Bethesda on Fallout's 25th anniversary, you can see a small white device on the top shelf that's actually a Keystone prototype. Xbox told Digital Trends that it was a version of the device made before it decided to "refocus our efforts on a new approach.”
