Silent Hills is dead, according to everyone but Konami

April has been a rough month for fans looking forward to Silent Hills. Earlier this month, the Kojima Productions logo was removed from the game’s website, and it was reported over the weekend that P.T., the “playable teaser” for the game, is going to be removed from the PlayStation Store this week.

Considering the rampant rumors of Silent Hills co-director Hideo Kojima’s impending exit from Konami, fans began to fear for the worst. Then an attendee at the San Francisco Film Festival tweeted that Guillermo del Toro, who was to co-direct the game with Kojima, said of the series: “It’s not gonna happen and that breaks my greasy heart.”

Shortly thereafter, Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus, who lent both his image and voice to the game, echoed that sentiment, tweeting: “Super bummed about this was really looking forward to it. Hopefully it’ll come back around. Sorry everyone.”

While it was later revealed that del Toro was speaking only of collaborating with Kojima, as was reported to a source speaking to IGN, things still weren’t looking good for the series. On Monday, Konami finally offered a response to the rumors. As to Silent Hills’ immediate future, all the company had to say is “we will continue to develop the Silent Hill series,” according to Eurogamer.

The company used similarly terse language in addressing other rumors, saying that Norman Reedus’ image disappeared from the website because its contract period with him had expired, and that P.T. is being removed from the PlayStation store because its distribution period has ended.

What Konami didn’t say is that Silent Hills is still in the works. Even if the game is still in development, without Kojima and del Toro on board, it isn’t going to be the same game that fans have been anxiously awaiting. If Silent Hills isn’t dead, it’s likely alive in name only.

For a glimpse at what might have been, PS4 owners can continue to download P.T. from the PlayStation Store until April 29.

Konami hosted a Silent Hill showcase where they revealed not just one but four games in the works (along with another feature film). The Silent Hill series is coming back, and we’re not just getting one new game ... we’re getting four. And a new movie! And more merch!

It’s certainly more than what a lot of people would have expected when Konami announced we were getting a presentation on the series’ future last week (I’m a big series fan, and my expectations were very low). Most people were expecting a new game and a Silent Hill 2 remake based on leaks and rumors, but the series had been all but dormant since Silent Hill: Downpour in 2012, so there was no reason to expect anything more. In the past decade, Konami has used the IP on pachinko machines, skateboards, and little else.

Three mysterious new Silent Hill games are in development

During Konami's Silent Hill Transmission showcase, the company announced three brand new Silent Hill games. Silent Hill: Townfall, Silent Hill: Ascension, and Silent Hill F.

Silent Hill Townfall is being developed by No Code and published by Annapurna Interactive. The studio released a teaser trailer, and while not many details were revealed, such as drop date or platforms, No Code creative director Jon McKellan says, "To say that Silent Hill has been an inspiration to No Code would be a massive understatement. Our previous two games, Stories Untold and Observation both played with that same deep psychological horror."
