Kojima did not divulge specific details regarding the meeting, noting only that he wished to pass along an “update about my own company.”
Kojima and Reedus previously teamed up during the production of Silent Hills, a planned reboot of the classic survival horror series Silent Hill. Film director Guillermo del Toro had also signed on for the project, and a playable teaser, P.T., made a strong impression among fans.
Shortly after P.T.‘s release, however, Kojima’s relationship with Japanese publisher Konami seemingly soured, and Silent Hills was permanently shelved as a result. Del Toro afterward pledged that he would “never again get involved in video games” following a series of similar disappointments and cancellations.
Kojima recently joined up with Sony after formally ending his nearly three-decade stint at Konami. The partnership saw the reestablishment of Kojima’s previously dissolved studio Kojima Productions, and the veteran director is now working on a gaming project that will be exclusive to PlayStation consoles.
“I will be taking on a new challenge by establishing my own independent studio, and I am thrilled to be able to embark on this journey with PlayStation, who I have continued to work with all these past years,” Kojima said. “I cannot wait to deliver, with PlayStation, a game that will become a compelling franchise.”
Kojima later assumed the mantle of YouTube stardom, launching his HideoTube web series earlier this month via Kojima Productions’ YouTube channel.
While many fans hold out hope that Silent Hills can be salvaged, it’s more likely that remnants of the project will resurface in Kojima’s debut release under Sony’s banner. It’s not yet clear whether Kojima plans to partner with Reedus for his current production.
