Sony Reveals Metal Gear Solid PS3

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that it is briefly resurrecting an 80 GB configuration of its PlayStation 3 video game console as part of a limited edition bundle tied to the upcoming game title Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

The “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” PlayStation 3 Hardware Bundle will feature a white-boxed 80 GB PS3 with a Dual Shock 3 rumble-enabled controller, and will include the Standard Edition of the Metal Gear Solid 4 game.

However, most importantly to MSG fans, Sony has confirmed it will be shipping a limited number of special gunmetal-grey PS3 in North America, branded for Metal Gear Solid 4. The grey units have been available in Japan in limited quantities, and have been selling out very quickly: Sony anticipates the special editions will evaporate equally quickly in the North American market.

Metal Gear Solid 4; Guns of the Patriots is due to hit retailers June 12, 2008. It has been rated M for “Mature” by the ESRB. Sony has not announced pricing for the special hardware bundle or the gunmetal-grey edition of the PS3 console.

As we reach the middle of this current console generation, people are wondering when improved “Pro” versions of consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will arrive. PS5 fans had their curiosity rewarded this week when Moore’s Law is Dead and Insider Gaming leaked the specs of what has become colloquially known as the PS5 Pro and is reportedly referred to as “Trinity” internally at Sony.

The leaked documents indicate that the PS5 Pro will have a similar CPU to the base model that can be modified to run at a slightly higher clock speed, as well as 67 teraflops of 16 bit floating-point calculations, a GPU with 60 AMD compute units and faster memory bandwidth, and more. These are improvements over the launch PS5 model, but it isn’t a console generation-like leap in terms of hardware power.
