Sony to skip E3 for the second year in a row, despite PS5’s impending launch

Godfall - Reveal Trailer

E3 just isn’t the all-encompassing gaming convention it used to be, as it appears Sony is no longer interested in attending the event. PlayStation will be absent from E3 2020 after skipping last year’s convention as well, despite the upcoming launch of the PlayStation 5 and several highly anticipated games.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony shared that it didn’t feel E3 2020 would be “the right venue for what [it is] focused on this year.”

It appears a monthlong Experience PlayStation event could be partially taking the place of any E3 presentation, and it’s rumored to begin January 14. Typically, Sony has unveiled its consoles fully in February, and we anticipate this also being the case with the PS5.

PlayStation will likely be the only first-party game company to not attend E3 2020, as it appears Microsoft will be holding its own press conference in keeping with its traditions. Nintendo no longer holds a standard press conference in a live setting, but its Nintendo Direct presentations have become the norm since 2013, and are generally one of the highlights of each year’s convention.

The Entertainment Software Association, which caught flak several months ago after accidentally exposing thousands of E3 attendees’ personal data to the public, has issued its own statement on Sony’s choice.

“E3 is a signature event celebrating the video game industry and showcasing the people, brands, and innovations redefining entertainment loved by billions of people around the world,” the statement said. “E3 2020 will be an exciting, high-energy show featuring new experiences, partners, exhibitor spaces, activations, and programming that will entertain new and veteran attendees alike.”

With the show now open to the paying public alongside the press, E3 2020 will certainly need a little extra pizzazz to keep generating interest.

Sony’s absence last year was the first time since E3 began that the company did not attend. Recently, Electronic Arts has elected to hold a separate event just before the start of E3. Major publishers such as Bethesda and Ubisoft have stuck by their standard press conference formula, albeit with a focus more on demonstrations and gameplay than the theatrics we’ve seen in the past.

E3 2020 will be held in Los Angeles from June 9 through June 11.

PS4 vs. PS5: which console should you buy in 2024?
PlayStation 5 controller and PS5.

PlayStation 5 has been available for several years now, and it's easier than ever to find it in stock at retailers. The new-gen hardware makes big upgrades over its predecessor, letting gamers enjoy better graphics, shorter loading times, and support for the fancy DualSense controller. It's also much more expensive than PS4, so while PS5 is better than PS4 in most regards, it might not be ideal for frugal shoppers.

But is PS4 or PS5 the better choice in 2024? Does the aging PS4 really make sense to purchase right now, or should you opt for the PS5? From pricing and available games to storage and resolution, here's a closer look at these two popular consoles.
PS5 vs. PS4 vs. PS4 Pro specs
Even a cursory glance at the specs of the PS5 shows that it’s in a different league than the PS4 (and even the PS4 Pro). Sony has improved the capabilities of its platform in every way, adding more efficient storage, faster compute parts, support for larger capacity disks, and support for higher resolutions. We know there are two versions of the PS5 -- the Standard Edition and Digital Edition -- both of which will offer the same specs (with the exception of the omission of a disc drive with the Digital Edition).

A person plays Crash Bandicoot using a PS5 DualSense controller.

There's a lot to love about PS5, but it's missing one key feature from the old PS4 -- themes. On the old console, themes were used as a way to customize your homescreen and were often inspired by iconic games or beloved characters. Unfortunately, themes aren't available on PS5, though Sony has implemented a cool new feature that modifies the background as you browse your collection of games.

Here's a comprehensive look at how you can customize your PS5 homescreen and whether you can change its background.

How to connect Bluetooth headphones to a PS5
montblanc mb01 headphones review 7

While the PS5 does indeed have Bluetooth built-in, there is little native support for headphones or other audio products; Bluetooth on the PS5 has been included primarily for connecting wireless keyboards and mice, as well as approved Sony products. Don’t fret, though: there is a way to connect your headset to your game console, and it’s relatively easy—assuming you're willing to buy a Bluetooth transmitter.

Once you have the Bluetooth transmitter, you're a few easy steps away from connecting Bluetooth headphones to your PS5 . Read on as we describe the pairing process in detail.
