Films centered on Venom and the Sinister Six are officially in development, the studio confirms. The films will be complimentary to The Amazing Spider-Man films, and are in addition to 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and its confirmed follow-up, both starring Andrew Garfield in the title role. The Venom and Sinister Six films will be the product of a newly established “franchise brain trust” between director Marc Webb, producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, and writers Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddard.

Kurtzman, Orci, and Pinkner, the trio that wrote The Amazing Spider-Man 2, are set to deliver The Amazing Spider-Man 3 screenplay, which is targeted for release on June 10, 2016. The press release notes that the third Spidey film will “build on the cinematic foundation laid by Webb, Arad, and Tolmach in the first two movies.” There’s no confirmation here, but the way it’s phrased leaves room for Webb, who directed the first and second Amazing films, to step into more of a producer role for the third.

There’s no timetable for the villain-focused films, but we know how the franchise brain trust’s creative talents are aligning around each. Venom writing duties go to Kurtzman, Orci, and Solomon, with Kurtzman set to direct in his blockbuster debut. The Sinister Six movies falls to Goddard, who will write “with an eye to direct.” This is Goddard’s first collaboration on Sony’s Spider-Man efforts; he is perhaps best known as the writer of Cloverfield and the director/co-writer of Cabin in the Woods. Goddard is also confirmed as the showrunner of the upcoming Daredevil TV show to air on Netflix.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters on May 2, 2014. The recently released trailer revealed a good bit more of the plot, including the fact that Sinister Six collaborator (from the comics, at least) Green Goblin makes an appearance alongside previously confirmed villains Electro (Jamie Foxx) and Rhino (Paul Giamatti). The trailer is also chock full of nods to the larger Spider-Man universe, all of which takes on new meaning now that we know Venom and Sinister Six efforts are in the works.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is eyeing a fall 2023 release date
Miles Morales and Peter Parker stand together in Spider-Man 2.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has a new release window. According to a new PlayStation Blog post, the upcoming superhero game will launch sometime in 2023.

We haven't heard much about Marvel's Spider-Man 2 since it was first announced with a teaser trailer. All we knew was that it would launch sometime in 2023. According to developer Insomniac, we now know it'll launch in time for the holidays, barring delays.

PlayStation’s Spider-Man cameos in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer
best ps4 exclusives marvel s spider man 1080p wallpaper 2

In a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo, Insomniac Games' version of Spider-Man appears in the new trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
In the trailer, we get a look at a hub where dozens of different versions of Spider-Man are hanging out and working together. This is where you can see what appears to be Insomniac's version of Spider-Man, as he is walking and talking to another Spider-Man in a black-and-red suit. The suit design is slightly different, with red patches on its legs, but otherwise, this character looks just like the Spider-Man from 2018's PS4 game. Could this be our first look at new versions of Peter and Miles' suits in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, or is Sony Pictures Animations just taking some creative liberties? Only time will tell.

It's unknown if Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will reference or set up this appearance. It's unlikely that Insomniac's Spider-Man will have much bearing on the narrative of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse -- chances are that this is little more than a cameo. Lots of Spider-Men will appear in this film, and a bunch of them are seen chasing Miles at the end. Twitter, in particular, seems pretty happy that the Spider-Man Unlimited version of Peter Parker is seen chasing Miles. Regardless, it's cool to see one of the most recent video game interpretations of the character represented in a Spider-Man film.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will hit theaters on June 2, 2023. Meanwhile, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is slated to be released for PlayStation 5 sometime next year. A page for the game appeared on the PlayStation Store earlier this week, but was taken down.

Venom shouldn’t be Spider-Man 2’s villain, he should be a playable character
Venom Spider-Man 2

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was revealed at yesterday's PlayStation Showcase as just one of two titles that developer Insomniac is currently working on. It appears Insomniac really lives up to its name, but that's beside the point. The game's main antagonist, it seems, is the creepy symbiote Venom. The hulking creature is the opposite of Spider-Man in just about every way. He's tall, bulky, jumps real high instead of shooting webs, and ... oh yeah, he eats people.

That's why I want Insomniac to put me in the driver's seat behind that monstrous force of nature.
