Sony is off to a fairly strong start in 2024, with games like The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Rise of the Ronin, and Stellar Blade, but the PS5’s lineup for the back half of the year is still shrouded in mystery. Thankfully, a new State of Play stream is imminent. We’re hoping that the 30-minute presentation gives us a new look at Until Dawn’s remake and Firewalk Studios’ multiplayer game Concord, as well as some surprises.

When is May 2024’s State of Play?

Sony has confirmed that the May 2024 State of Play presentation will start airing live today at 3 p.m. PT. According to the PlayStation Blog, it will be a “30+ minute show,” so set some time aside to watch it tomorrow afternoon.

You can expect the next State of Play to be live-streamed across PlayStation’s official YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok channels, as is typically the case with all of PlayStation’s game reveal presentations. We’ll embed the YouTube premiere link into this post as soon as it’s available, so you can watch it right from this article.

What to expect from May 2024’s State of Play

Sony’s official description of this live steam simply says it will feature “updates on PS5 and PS VR2 titles, plus a look at PlayStation Studios games arriving later this year.” It adds that 14 games in total will be shown off. Specific games haven’t been confirmed, but we do have some well-educated guesses. Right now, the two PlayStation-published games we know are slated for 2024 are a remake of Until Dawn and the sci-fi multiplayer game Concord, so it feels likely that both will be shown off during this State of Play.

Meanwhile, there are rumors that PlayStation is also working on a Lego game set in the world of Horizon and a new game starring Astro Bot. If either of those games is real and imminent, we may get a look at them here. Outside of that, State of Play showcases are typically full of surprise indie and third-party PlayStation titles as well, so hopefully, some other awesome upcoming games will be put on our radar following this presentation.

Sony just put one final nail in the PlayStation VR2’s coffin

PlayStation VR2 has been murdered. The culprit: Astro Bot.

My favorite announcement of Sony's May 30 State of Play was Astro Bot, a new 3D platformer from Team Asobi that celebrates PlayStation history. It looks incredibly charming and stands out from the typical narrative-action games like Stellar Blade that Sony tends to release these days. That said, my excitement also comes with disappointment as it does not appear that the game will support PlayStation VR2. (Digital Trends reached out to Sony to confirm that was the case but has not gotten a response at the time of publishing this story.)

Astro Bot will reference one of PlayStation’s oldest memes

The Astro Bot series is known for showcasing PlayStation history, with some incredible deep cuts and cameos. For the upcoming Astro Bot, which was officially announced during Sony's latest State of Play this week, that apparently comes in the form of a nearly 20-year-old meme.

In an interview with EW, Team Asobi head Nicolas Doucet mentioned some of the characters that players will encounter spread throughout the game's 80 planets. This includes some obvious inclusions, like Nathan Drake from the Uncharted franchise and Aloy from the Horizon games, but snuck into one of the paragraphs is mention of an island in the shape of a giant crab.

Hey PlayStation, I’ll take more games like Astro Bot, please

Sony kicked off a marathon of gaming reveals this week with an exciting State of Play stream. The 30-minute broadcast shed some light on what's coming to the PlayStation 5 in the back half of 2024 and beyond. We saw an extended look at Concord, got a release date for Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 remake, and learned more about Supermassive's Until Dawn remake. But the most exciting announcement of the show wasn't a live-service shooter or a game pushing photorealistic visuals. It was a cute little robot who stole the show.

Astro Bot got the final slot during the State of Play stream -- and for good reason. Sony revealed a delightful trailer for its upcoming platformer that had social media buzzing. Even this morning, you'll find "GOTY" (game of the year) trending on X (formerly Twitter) and posts preemptively crowning Astro Bot as 2024's best game.
