Summer Game Fest set for June, and you can watch it in IMAX

The E3-like event, Summer Game Fest, is returning for another round this year. The event is set to hit screens everywhere through various livestreaming services on Thursday, June 9. And this year, viewers don’t have to be confined to their homes as they can witness the event on select IMAX theater screens as well.

Summer Games Fest is a gaming showcase created and hosted by Geoff Keighley, who also hosts and produces The Game Awards. Like The Game Awards and E3, Summer Game Fest features upcoming game announcements and large-scale updates from developers.

Today, Keighley not only announced that the event formally kicks off on June 9, taking the completely canceled E3 conference’s usual summer spot, but he also revealed that he’s taking the event to the next level with an IMAX theater partnership. Starting next week, on May 12, anyone interested in watching the event in a theater with a possible crowd can purchase tickets for the show. What Keighley seems to be aiming for is a small-scale, in-person experience similar to typical E3 press conferences.

While the event is available to experience on IMAX, Keighley and IMAX made it clear that it may not be at every single theater. You’ll have to check listings through IMAX to see which theaters are participating in the event.

With E3 taking a break for the year, it can be assumed that the event may have more announcements than usual, so this year’s event will be one to watch. Sumer Game Fest airs next month on Thursday, June 9 at 11:00 a.m. PT.

This retro platformer is like Super Meat Boy or Celeste if you couldn’t jump

Wall jumping in Splodey.

What if jumping in a challenging platformer like Celeste or Super Meat Boy was impossible? That's the idea at the core of Splodey, a new game from Send It Studios and influencer-owned game publisher Mad Mushroom.

A surprise release at June 4's OTK Games Expo showcase, Splodey is a platformer where players must throw potion bombs to propel themselves forward rather than jump. Clearly inspired by speedrunning-friendly platformers like Super Meat Boy and Celeste, Splodey changes how just one core mechanic works to craft a unique identity of its own. This next week or so is going to be full of surprise launches and exciting game announcements, but if you can take some time away from those to try a new game, pick up Splodey.
A platformer where players can't jump
Splodey has the pixel art aesthetic and simple story of a retro game. It's about the titular character, who struggles to make potions that don't explode at the Academy of Potion Making, so he decides to take down the entire establishment. From there, players are let free to complete four worlds worth of platforming challenges. Splodey can't jump, though, so it must use those explosive potions to propel itself forward to the portal at the end of each level.

Publisher Annapurna Interactive's next title, Flock, has a new summer release date. The oddball nature-classification game will launch on July 16 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. It will launch as part of Xbox Game Pass on that date, too.

Flock is the latest game from Richard Hogg and Hollow Ponds, the indie team behind Wilmot's Warehouse and I Am Dead. It's a cozy exploration game where players ride through the skies on the back of a bird and categorize different animals. Summer Game Fest will return for the fifth year in a row today, and with that comes a kickoff showcase.
