Sunset Overdrive goes free for Xbox Games with Gold in April

Microsoft is giving away free downloadable copies of its open-world Xbox One action game Sunset Overdrive next month as part of Games with Gold, a member-exclusive perk for Xbox Live Gold service subscribers.

Xbox Live Gold subscribers will also receive a free copy of Telltale Games’ The Wolf Among Us in April, along with a pair of Xbox 360 classics that are playable on the Xbox One via the platform’s backward compatibility feature.

Released in 2014, Sunset Overdrive is a frantically paced third-person shooter created by Ratchet & Clank series developer Insomniac Games. In Sunset Overdrive, players find themselves in a massive city teeming with hordes of mutants that they can fend off using an arsenal of unconventional weaponry.

Sunset Overdrive emphasizes traversal gameplay, and rewards players for performing high-flying stunts and rail grinds mid-battle. Stylish kills award damage multipliers and other bonuses, upping the player’s destructive capabilities and increasing their chances of survival.

Also up for grabs for Xbox Live Gold subscribers in April is the full season of Telltale Games’ The Wolf Among Us. Based on the Fables comic book series, The Wolf Among Us is a narrative-based adventure game similar to Telltale’s hit The Walking Dead. Decisions and dialog choices affect events in later chapters, giving players control over how the game’s overarching story plays out.

Xbox 360 games that are offered as part of April’s Xbox Games with Gold include Dead Space, a survival horror game originally released by Electronic Arts in 2008. And April’s final Games with Gold title is Saints Row IV, an open-world third-person shooter in which players wreak havoc within a virtual cityscape using superhuman powers and abilities.

The Wolf Among Us and Dead Space will be up for grabs for Xbox Live Gold subscribers on April 1, and Sunset Overdrive and Saints Row IV will be free to download starting on April 16.

It's been a busy few weeks for console war soldiers.

Tensions spiked last month when "Nate the Hate," an industry insider with a decent track record, claimed that Hi-Fi Rush was headed to Nintendo Switch. The rumor sparked some mixed feelings among Xbox fans, some of whom expressed dismay over one of the console's system-selling exclusives coming to another platform. Other reports at the time claimed that Rare's Sea of Thieves could also be bound for PlayStation and Switch. That rising anger came to a head this weekend when XboxEra reported that Xbox is planning to launch its biggest exclusive, Starfield, on PS5.

Persona 3 Reload leads a surprisingly strong batch of Xbox Game Pass additions

Microsoft unveiled the next batch of new Xbox Game Pass titles, which are dropping between January 18 and February 8. Of the seven new titles coming to the video game subscription service over that time span, four are new games being added on the day of their release. The most noteworthy of those games is Persona 3 Reload, Atlus' highly anticipated remake of an RPG classic.

Persona 3 was first released for the PlayStation 2 in Japan in 2006 and came to North America just a year later. While its sequels would go on to garner a bit more immediate acclaim, Persona 3 provided the solid foundation that they all built on. It is darker than those future entries, though, as you'll go from living your life as a Japanese teenager to shooting a gun at your own head to summon a Persona in stylish turn-based battles. Persona 3 is considered one of the best RPGs of its generation, and this remake brings the experience to modern platforms with a visual overhaul that makes it look more like Persona 5.

These Activision Blizzard games need to come to Xbox Game Pass this year

In October 2023, Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and by the end of the year, the latter company's CEO had departed. Now, this will be the year where we’ll see how Activision Blizzard functions when fully integrated into Microsoft. The most immediate change for those who play games will likely be Activision Blizzard titles coming to Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft’s subscription service.

Microsoft and Activision have explained that because of the tribulations the acquisition encountered, it was impossible to have Xbox Game Pass additions prepared almost immediately after the acquisition, as it did with ZeniMax Media. In the coming months, I expect we’ll finally start to see Activision Blizzard games trickle onto the service, even if we shouldn't expect it from this week's Developer_Direct. As Activision Blizzard is one of the oldest game publishers out there, having released hundreds of games, there are plenty of titles to choose from. I’ve cherry-picked the ones I want to see most.
