Nintendo fan “Forteblast” has fully recreated one of the most obscure entries in Nintendo’s flagship Super Mario franchise using the Wii U game design toolkit Super Mario Maker, making the little-seen spinoff accessible to a broad player base for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Thanks to Forteblast’s efforts, every level originally featured in the Hudson-developed Super Mario Bros. Special is now playable in Super Mario Maker, offering a unique look at a game originally exclusive to the NEC PC-8801 and Sharp X1 home computers in Japan.

Released in 1986, Super Mario Bros. Special is an officially licensed Mario series spinoff that adapts Nintendo’s landmark platformer to Japanese home computers. While the game is visually similar to its NES inspiration, Super Mario Bros. Special uses unique level layouts, and features enemies and items not seen in Nintendo-developed Mario games.

Developer Hudson needed to make a number of concessions in order to account for the shift in hardware, however, and Super Mario Bros. Special features a distinctly garish, flickery presentation. Notably, Super Mario Bros. Special does not feature smoothly scrolling backdrops, instead presenting its gameplay across a series of interconnected still screens.

The game’s technical shortcomings have earned it notoriety among series fans, who consider Super Mario Bros. Special to be one of the most difficult entries in the series. The lack of scrolling makes it especially challenging for players accustomed to traditional Mario series mechanics.

Forteblast’s adaptation adds scrolling backdrops to these levels for the first time, arguably improving on their original design and making Super Mario Bros. Special‘s challenges more accessible for casual players.

“I’ve needed to make some minor changes in the levels,” Forteblast explains. “One-way blocks to represent the inability to backtrack for mazes, switched out stalactites for spinies, no pulley platforms, no special Hudson powerups or enemies, had to shorten a couple of levels left-to-right because of the level size limit, etc. But I’ve done the best I could.”

Forteblast’s recreated Super Mario Bros. Special levels can be accessed in Super Mario Maker starting at world 1-1 by entering the level ID 359D-0000-0080-762B.

Super Mario RPG Wedding Hall guide: Where to find Peach’s crown and other accessories
Princess Peach with a parasol in Super Mario RPG.

Mario and friends have chased down Peach to Marrymore late into Super Mario RPG. It isn't Bowser who has her in his clutches this time, but Booster, who intends to marry the princess against her will. After busting into the church to call things off, Peach's crown and other accessories will be scattered across the chapel. You will need to find every last missing item before the ceremony begins, but they aren't all in plain sight. Here is where to find Peach's crown and all her other accessories in Super Mario RPG.
Where to find all of Peach's accessories

Aside from her crown, you will need to find her shoes, ring, and brooch as well.
Peach's crown location
The crown is the easiest to find since it will be in sight right away. After the collision, the crown ends up resting atop Booster's head standing at the altar. All you need to do is jump on top of him to get it back.
Shoes, ring, and brooch locations
The other three items weren't dropped on the floor, but havebeen collected by Booster's Sniffits. These quick little dudes will be running in patterns around the church and pews, so you need to intercept and speak to each of them. Just talking to them will do the trick -- you don't have to engage in a fight -- so just mash the talk button as you approach.

5 Square Enix RPGs that need to make a Super Mario RPG-style comeback
Mario. Peach, Mallow, Bowser, and Geno find one of the Seven Stars in Super Mario RPG.

This month has been an exciting one for fans of old-school Square Enix role-playing games, as two of its classic RPGs got impressive remakes. On November 2, Gemdrops and Square Enix's Star Ocean: The Second Story R gave the PS1 cult classic the HD-2D treatment, while ArtePiazza and Nintendo's remake of Square's SNES classic Super Mario RPG dropped on November 17. As both games have rarely been rereleased, it's great to see each getting the drastic modern visual overhauls they deserved.

These are far from the only retro Square Enix RPGs that deserve this treatment, though. Over the past couple of years, Square Enix has shown some love to more obscure classics like Live A Live, The World Ends With You, and Valkyrie Profile. Yet plenty of other games and series are still locked to old platforms. At the very least, they deserve to be rereleased via something like the PS Plus Game Catalog's classic library. If this remake trend is going to continue, these five games should be next in line for the Super Mario RPG and Star Ocean: The Second Story treatment.

Nintendo introduces a new Super Smash Bros. Switch OLED for Black Friday
Super Smash Bros. Nintendo Switch OLED.

Nintendo unveiled all of the Black Friday deals and bundles it plans to offer in the coming weeks. These offerings are headlined by a brand new Nintendo Switch bundle with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that has never been available before.
The Nintendo Switch -- OLED Model: Super Smash Bros. Ulitmate Bundle costs $350 and comes with a code for the fantastic 2018 crossover fighting game as well as three months of a Nintendo Switch Online Membership. The bundle's Joy-Cons feature a design based on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Unfortunately, this deal includes neither Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Fighter Passes nor the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. Nintendo says this bundle will be released on November 19, although they've already been spotted in some stores.
The other big new offering from Nintendo this holiday season is the Super Mario Party + Red & Blue Joy-Con Bundle. It costs $100 and includes a download code for Super Mario Party in addition to Red and Blue Joy-Con controllers. Keep in mind that this bundle includes 2018's Super Mario Party, not 2021's Mario Party Superstars, which remastered a lot of content from the series' older games.

Nintendo also plans to offer bundles that have been available before, like the Nintendo Switch Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Bundle and Animal Crossing: New Horizons Nintendo Switch Lite.
Various game discounts for Switch games will also go into effect on November 19. In terms of Nintendo-published games, people can expect Everybody 1-2-Switch! and Nintendo Switch Sports to be discounted by $10, titles like Luigi's Mansion 3, Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 to have $20 discounts, and for Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Mario Strikers: Battle League, and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes to all be available $30 cheaper than usual. Sadly, it does not look like Nintendo itself will offer any major deals surrounding this year's The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
All of these bundles and deals will become available on November 19.
