Universal’s Super Nintendo World may feature Nintendo Switch integration

Super Nintendo World, which is set to open in Universal Studios Japan in the spring of 2020, may feature Nintendo Switch integration to augment the theme park’s interactive experience.

Universal Parks & Resorts chairman and CEO Tom Williams, in an interview with Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s Jessica Jean Reif Cohen, provided several details about Super Nintendo World ahead of its debut next year in Japan.

“It’s a whole new separate area of the park,” Williams said, with the first phase to offer two rides, namely Super Mario Kart Ride and Yoshi’s Adventures. The CEO added that visitors will be wearing magnetic wristbands that will allow them to interact with the various levels of the park, similar to how lightsabers work in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland. The wristbands will also keep scores as the wearer plays the different games throughout Super Nintendo World.

Williams also said that the Super Nintendo World wristband also “interfaces with your game console.” He did not specifically mention the Nintendo Switch, but given the console’s portability, which will be boosted by the upcoming launch of the Nintendo Switch Lite, Williams is most likely referring to Nintendo’s latest console.

There was also no specific explanation of how exactly the Nintendo Switch will play a part in trips to Super Nintendo World. The console comes with built-in RFID technology, which is most frequently used with the Amiibo accessories, and that is likely what will be used to connect with the magnetic wristbands. It remains unclear what happens after that, with speculation including apps that may be accessed while within the theme park and games that may be unlocked to take home the experience.

Williams confirmed that Super Nintendo World will include a Bowser-themed area and Princess Peach’s castle, and promised that it will open in other Universal Studios parks over the coming years, though without providing a timeline.

Nintendo fans in the United States are now eagerly waiting for the opening of Super Nintendo World in Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Orlando, with Nintendo Switch in hand for whatever it will contribute to the highly anticipated experience.

During the November 2023 Indie World Showcase, it was revealed that many intriguing indie titles are coming to the Nintendo Switch over the next year. One of the show's biggest announcements was that Outer Wilds -- a critically acclaimed sci-fi game about exploring a solar system throughout repeating time loops -- is finally coming to the Nintendo Switch next month.

A Nintendo Switch port for Outer Wilds was first teased in 2021 and intended to be released during the summer of that year, but it did not make that release window. We did not hear much else about the port until now outside of a mention during one of publisher Annapurna Interactive's own showcases. An Indie World Showcase segment dedicated to the game showed some of its physics-based spacefaring gameplay in action on the Switch, and it seemed to look nice and run at a solid frame rate. Called Outer Wilds: Archaeologist Edition, this version of the game comes with the Echoes of the Eye DLC and will launch digitally on December 7. It will get a physical Switch release sometime next year.

Nintendo unveiled all of the Black Friday deals and bundles it plans to offer in the coming weeks. These offerings are headlined by a brand new Nintendo Switch bundle with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that has never been available before.
The Nintendo Switch -- OLED Model: Super Smash Bros. Ulitmate Bundle costs $350 and comes with a code for the fantastic 2018 crossover fighting game as well as three months of a Nintendo Switch Online Membership. The bundle's Joy-Cons feature a design based on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Unfortunately, this deal includes neither Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Fighter Passes nor the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. Nintendo says this bundle will be released on November 19, although they've already been spotted in some stores.
The other big new offering from Nintendo this holiday season is the Super Mario Party + Red & Blue Joy-Con Bundle. It costs $100 and includes a download code for Super Mario Party in addition to Red and Blue Joy-Con controllers. Keep in mind that this bundle includes 2018's Super Mario Party, not 2021's Mario Party Superstars, which remastered a lot of content from the series' older games.

Nintendo also plans to offer bundles that have been available before, like the Nintendo Switch Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Bundle and Animal Crossing: New Horizons Nintendo Switch Lite.
Various game discounts for Switch games will also go into effect on November 19. In terms of Nintendo-published games, people can expect Everybody 1-2-Switch! and Nintendo Switch Sports to be discounted by $10, titles like Luigi's Mansion 3, Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 to have $20 discounts, and for Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Mario Strikers: Battle League, and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes to all be available $30 cheaper than usual. Sadly, it does not look like Nintendo itself will offer any major deals surrounding this year's The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
All of these bundles and deals will become available on November 19.

When it comes to multiplayer integration, Nintendo can be wildly unpredictable. Unstable online servers and disappointing co-op experiences built for young players can leave its games lacking. Thankfully, that's not the case with Super Mario Bros. Wonder. In fact, the new 2D adventure might just contain the best Nintendo multiplayer experience on the Switch next to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

At any point while playing Super Mario Bros. Wonder, players can bring their game online with the press of a button in the main menu. Doing so will unlock several multiplayer features at once. For one, there's traditional online multiplayer. Simply press a button to "play with friends" and you'll be able to explore both the overworld and levels co-operatively. Like the New Super Mario Bros. series, four players can work together to complete levels (which can be very hectic fun).
