Take a peek at the new ‘Glacier White’ Destiny PlayStation 4 bundle

Destiny‘s September 9, 2014 release was joined this week by a new PlayStation 4 bundle from Sony. While it includes a copy of the game, that’s actually not the most exciting thing in the package. No, that distinction belongs to the console itself. It’s white. Glacier White, to use Sony’s designation. It doesn’t make any special noises, nor does it bear any Destiny branding. It is literally a white PS4 console, with a glossy sheen on one side and more of a matte texture on the other, just like the standard black PS4.

There’s also a white DualShock 4, and a pretty snazzy one too with black face/trigger buttons and analog sticks offsetting the all-white body nicely. Like the console, it doesn’t do anything differently. It’s just a new paint job. If you got a PS4 for yourself at or after launch, this is the same machine with the same 500GB hard drive inside it. There’s no upgrade here, unless you want something shiny and not-black to stand out in your gear-filled entertainment center.

Perhaps the most notable benefit of PlayStation Plus is that every month, Sony gives subscribers one PlayStation 5 and two PlayStation 4 games that are free to download. You have one month to add these free PlayStation Plus games to your library.

I would buy a PlayStation Portal 2 if it had this one feature

I've had a bit of a love-hate relationship with the PlayStation Portal since it launched. Initially, I was disappointed by Sony's cloud streaming device. I was impressed with its screen and appreciated its DualSense integration, but its slimmeddown features made it feel like a cheap version of a good idea. I've since learned to find a use case for my PlayStation Portal that turned it into an integral part of my gaming setup. It's very imperfect, but that doesn't mean it's not useful.

Ever since its launch, I've been hoping for a refreshed follow-up, whether that be a Pro model or a true PlayStation Portal 2. It may be way too early to start discussing that considering that the Portal just launched in November 2023, but the promising device has enough glaring flaws that I'd welcome a fast-tracked successor. If Sony were to make a PlayStation Portal 2, though, there's one feature that's nonnegotiable: Bluetooth.

Sony shows off a futuristic PlayStation controller, but don’t get too excited

In its annual corporate strategy meeting, Sony debuted a video that featured a blink-and-you'll-miss-it concept for a redesigned game controller.

The presentation, which you can watch below, was dedicated to talking about Sony's future "creative entertainment vision," and included a lot of talk about the metaverse, mixed reality, and what it perceives as the future of game development. During a segment that showed off many futuristic-looking devices, you can see a circular controller working with a projected screen.
