'The Culling' brings 'Hunger Games'-style mayhem to the Xbox One on June 2

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds hasn’t made it to consoles yet, but another brutal and addictive Battle Royale-inspired multiplayer game soon will. The Culling, a first-person action game originally available only on PC, will be releasing through X on June 2.

Inspired by the 2000 Japanese movie Battle Royale, The Culling places you and 15 other players on a large, open map with nothing more than your wits. As you explore, you’ll acquire materials you can use to make primitive weapons; other, more advanced gear is also scattered throughout the map. If you come across another player, a fight to the death ensues. Whoever is left standing at the end is victorious.

To keep players from simply hiding for 25 minutes in the hope that the other contestants just kill each other off, The Culling gradually reduces its map size by releasing poison gas. Players must eventually make a mad dash for the center, preferably with a gun or sword that they can use to dispatch any other survivors. From our experience with the PC version, it’s a tense, frantic affair. Quickly finding a locker containing an upgrade or a better weapon can be the difference-maker early on in a match, but a skilled player with just a simple spear or bow can still cause plenty of damage.

“Our team has put a tremendous amount of effort into controls, optimization, and balance to make sure the Xbox experience is top-notch,” said Michael McMain, CEO of developer Xaviant, in a press release. “We couldn’t be more excited to use feedback from Game Preview players to take The Culling to the next level.”

In addition to the standard free-for-all offering, The Culling also includes a team-based mode, as well as an offline option for practicing. Two maps, “The Island” and “Cul County Correctional,” are currently available.

I’m always excited for those two days every month when Xbox drops a blog post detailing the new additions coming to Game Pass. Even in slow months, there’s usually a hidden gem on there that I’m curious about digging into. Though as curious as I am about checking out what’s new, I often forget to scroll to the bottom and see what’s leaving the service. And just as there are a few standouts added to the service each month, Game Pass also tends to quietly lose just as many with each new batch.

That’s exactly the case this July. While the service gains Grand Theft Auto V and Exoprimal this month, it’s also losing two standout indies: Spelunky 2 and Exo One. One of my favorite 2022 games just came to Xbox Game Pass, and you need to try it

When I think back to 2022, there are a ton of critically acclaimed games that stick with me. Naturally, I spent countless hours adventuring through the Lands Between in Elden Ring. Splatoon 3 and Vampire Survivors ate up my entire summer, while I still think about Pentiment and Immortality months later. There's one lesser-known game, though, that was a go-to I kept coming back to throughout the year despite the fact that it wasn't talked about nearly as much as any of those games.

That would be Arcade Paradise, a quiet 2022 standout that's now available on Xbox Game Pass today. Developed by Nosebleed Interactive, it's a unique simulation game that balances 90s nostalgia with a thoughtful look at the line between hobby and work. If you spent any time during your youth hanging around arcades, you'll want to give it a try while it's on Game Pass.

Xbox Game Pass adds one of 2022’s best racing games this month

Microsoft has revealed that games that will be coming to Xbox Game Pass throughout the rest of June and even into early July. While the list lacks any major exclusives or first-party games, a solid racing game from 2022 and some intriguing indies make it an interesting batch. Thankfully, the losses the service will suffer at the end of the month aren't too bad either.
The most notable game to hit Xbox Game Pass Ultimate during the back half of June will be Need for Speed Unbound. Coming to the service via its EA Play connection, this is a solid racing game that I gave a three-and-a-half-star review last year. At the time, I said it was "a surprisingly entertaining racer in a year that hasn’t seen much racing game excitement since Gran Turismo 7." On the indie side of things, The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales will be a day one Xbox Game Pass release on June 22. It's an isometric adventure game where the main gimmick is that players can enter the worlds of books they come across.
Former PlayStation console exclusive F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch will also come to Xbox Series X/S via Xbox Game Pass on June 27. This is the full list of titles you can expect to come to the subscription service between today and July 5.
