After a strong, but unsurprising E3 2013 press conference in Los Angeles, Ubisoft once again saved a big surprise for the very end. Last year it closed the show with Watch Dogs, which then went on to become one of the most talked about games of the show. This year, Ubisoft did it again with the online, open-world RPG, The Division. It wasn’t quite as groundbreaking as last year’s unveiling, but it will be one of the most talked about games of the show.
Hosted by Aisha Tyler, the bulk of Ubisoft’s show highlighted titles and projects that were already announced. Closer looks at Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and the next-gen social racer The Crew were all impressive, and Watch Dogs once again had people gasping. The finale, however, belonged to Tom Clancy’s The Division.
The game comes to us from Massive Games. The story is around an experiment called “Dark Winter,” that showed us how vulnerable we are in all aspects of society. It goes on to say that money is both the driving force of the world, as well as the chain to a new virus that can be spread to everyone. Within days the world will begin to collapse. This is when Agency 51 is called in. the game is set in New York three weeks after the outbreak.
The game is a third person hooter that uses plenty of online connectivity. While palyers on a console play the game in a traditional fashion, another player can also join in with a tablet, controlling a spy drone. As you play with friends, you will come across other groups, also playing.
The Division is due in 2014 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One.
