Uncharted 3 beta launches for PlayStation Plus users next week

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception was one of the most talked about games to come out of E3 a few weeks ago. Sony revealed more about the game’s story and improved multiplayer, the latter of which is pegged for both a beta test and some kind of hinted-at early launch in advance of the full game. It’s the beta we’re here to talk about today, as the PlayStation Blog confirms that it will kick off next week on June 28 as a free download exclusively for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

Which is to say, everyone.

Don’t forget, the April network intrusion that led to the PlayStation Network being taken offline for a full month resulted in a Welcome Back package to thank the millions left offline for their patience. In addition to offering one year’s worth of free credit protection and a selection of free PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable games to download, Sony also included a free 30 days of PlayStation Plus membership to all users.

Since the PlayStation Store didn’t go back online until the start of June and the beta launches on June 28, you’ll still be in the free Plus window even if you grabbed the complimentary subscription immediately. Any mention of that bonus is wisely left out of the PS Blog post, but it’s something we’ll all be able to take advantage of come next Tuesday.

It’s a pretty shrewd move when you think about it. Not only does Sony get to “gift” all of its users with early access to one of the most anticipated releases of the year, it also gets to demonstrate for non-subscribers how cool the Plus advantages can be without giving away anything that could otherwise be sold. It’s a win all around, something the company surely needs after April and May.

PlayStation VR2’s best launch game isn’t the one you we’re expecting
fantavision 202x impressions hands on psvr2 outer space fireworks

With the PlayStation VR2 out now, all eyes are on Horizon Call of the Mountain. The action-adventure title is Sony’s first big exclusive for the platform, acting as its tentpole launch title. While it’s a must-buy for anyone picking up the device on day one, it's more successful as a strong technical showcase for the headset rather than as a fun game that stands on its own. If you’re looking for the latter, you’ll want to check out PSVR2’s real hidden weapon: Fantavision 202X.

Get these 6 PlayStation VR2 launch games to showcase its features
A side view of the PlayStation VR2, which sits on a wood table.

If you're planning on buying a PlayStation VR2 at launch, be prepared for an intimidating process as you decide which games to pick up first. Early adopters will have a lot of options to choose from, as Sony's latest headset will support over 40 games at launch. The bulk of those, though, are ports of preexisting VR games from the past few years. That makes it a little tricky to figure out which games actually showcase what the PSVR2 is capable of and which will feel like a dated experience that doesn't benefit from new tech.

To help guide you, we've spent time playing through a wide variety of launch titles, from classics like Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge all the way to Horizon Call of the Mountain. While there are plenty of games that we've enjoyed, including charmers like What the Bat? and Jurassic World Aftermath Collection, six games in particular act as great showcases for various PSVR2 features. Whether you're looking to test its power, Sense controllers, or audio options, you'll want to put these six games in your digital shopping cart.

PlayStation Plus just set a new first-party precedent with Horizon Forbidden West
Horizon: Forbidden West

Sony revealed the games coming to PlayStation Plus Premium and PlayStation Plus Extra this month on February 21, and it's the best month that the service has had since it launched in the summer of 2022. Not only are some great PS1 classics like The Legend of Dragoon and Wild Arms 2 coming to the service, but Horizon Forbbiden West is getting added as well.
Horizon Forbidden West coming to the service one year after launch is a big deal because Sony has been resistant to putting recent first-party PS5 games on its subscription service. While it's still not adding first-party titles on day one like Xbox Game Pass does, this is possibly our first indication of how Sony will handle adding its own games to the subscription. It's not the only PS4 and PS5 title coming to the service this month either, as the following strong lineup of games was also confirmed to be coming on February 21.

The Quarry (PS4, PS5)
Resident Evil VII Biohazard (PS4)
Outriders (PS4, PS5)
Scarlet Nexus (PS4, PS5)
Borderlands 3 (PS4, PS5)
Tekken 7 (PS4, PS5)
Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown (PS4)
Earth Defense Force 5 (PS4)
