Virgin Media 'Destiny 2' promotion gives customers a free Sparrow

Destiny 2 launches in a matter of days, and it’s fair to say that hype is reaching peak levels as gamers prepare for one of the biggest releases of the year. U.K. internet service provider Virgin Media is getting in on the excitement with some exclusive in-game content for its customers.

Guardians who receive their internet connection via Virgin Fibre will be rewarded with an exclusive Sparrow when the game is released next week. Sparrows are single-seater floating vehicles used to speed up long journeys, not unlike the speeder bikes seen in the Star Wars franchise.

Virgin Media’s exclusive Sparrow is dubbed Athena Victorious, and is decked out in the company’s red and white color scheme. The ISP pledges that it will allow Guardians to explore the various worlds included in Destiny 2 at “lightning speed” in a blog post published earlier today.

Destiny was a huge hit when it launched back in 2014. Players did complain about a lack of content, but that only goes to show how much demand there was for more of what was on offer. There’s a huge amount of anticipation for the sequel, and Virgin Media isn’t the only company looking to profit from the hype.

The first game ran a promotion in collaboration with Red Bull, offering players an extra quest obtained via codes printed on cans of the energy drink. This time around, Bungie has partnered with Monster and, bizarrely, Pop-Tarts, to ensure that Guardians exceed their recommended daily intake of sugar as they defend the earth.

The biggest video game releases have become increasingly reliant on this kind of advertising in recent years. Television ad campaigns and extended beta tests certainly play important roles in publicizing major titles, but now the offensive continues on supermarket shelves and in corner stores — and, apparently, in the form of freebies offered up by ISPs. Just last week, it was announced that subscribers to Comcast’s Xfinity internet service will get free access to the Call of Duty: WWII beta without the need for a pre-order.

Virgin Media customers will be able to get their hands on the Sparrow freebie on September 6, when Destiny 2 launches for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Ghostrunner 2 is already giving me more of what I loved about the original

Some games are memorable because of their intriguing themes, deep stories, or memorable worlds. Others are just damn fun to play. The original Ghostrunner, which was released by One More Level and 505 Games in 2020, is a game that embraces the latter category.
It was a frenetic first-person action game where players dashed around neon-soaked sci-fi levels, slashing through any enemies that got in their way. It wasn’t that complex of an experience, but it was a ton of fun from the moment I picked it up. That’s why I’m happy that One More Level and 505 Games are following it up with Ghostrunner 2, a direct sequel.

I recently had the chance to play some of Ghostrunner 2 ahead of its launch this October and found that it reliably carries forward the fast-paced fun of its predecessor that its PlayStation Showcase reveal hinted at. It even tries to up the cool factor with motorbike action set pieces -- although I’m not quite as sold on those segments as I am on the satisfying-as-ever combat.
Retaining the charm
My Ghostrunner 2 demo began with Jack, the ghostrunner from the first game, chasing someone named Mitra across the rooftops of the dystopian, neon-infused Dharma Tower. Within 30 seconds, Jack encountered some enemies from the Hammer gang, and the action began. As I got reacquainted with the Ghostrunner series’ now trademark combat, it felt like I was picking up the original for the first time again as I slashed through the initial couple of enemies.
Ghostrunner 2, like its predecessor, emphasizes speed and offense to create puzzle-like combat situations. Enemies only take a hit or two to defeat, but Jack also goes down similarly. As the encounters ramped up in difficulty, it was always important to keep moving, monitor whether or not the enemies near me had close- or long-range attacks, and watch for the right windows to dodge, block, or parry. If I did all that, I could always swoop in with a devastating counterblow and feel like a badass.
In-between those segments, light first-person platforming -- that incorporates sliding, swinging, wall running, air-dashing, rail-grinding, and grappling -- reinforces that feeling. These are all things the original Ghostrunner excelled at, and One More Level didn’t lose any of that magic with this sequel. In fact, it made the game’s levels more expansive from the start, so there are now multiple angles from which to approach many of the enemy encounters. If you just wanted more Ghostrunner, this sequel delivers.

New ideas
The game isn’t devoid of any new ideas, though. After fighting through the enemy forces, I came upon a warehouse. Inside, I found a motorbike, and before I knew it, Jack had hopped on to continue chasing Mitra. Driving on rooftops and walls, I could slash at certain switches to open doors, but mainly was trying to keep up my speed to stay in the range of Mitra’s signal while doing my best to dodge obstacles on the road.
Adding a high-octane vehicle segment like this is a natural evolution of the quick-kill, quick-death formula. It’s a gameplay gimmick common in many classic beat ’em ups, something that Ghostrunner 2 may be considered a modern interpretation of. But like the infamous Turbo Tunnel in Battletoads, the Ghostrunner 2 motorbike set piece in this demo wasn’t forgiving and was rougher around the edges than the slick combat.
One More Level has now had two games (and some DLC) worth of time to refine the first-person hack-and-slash combat, so it makes sense that it feels as great as ever. That’s why it’s a bit more apparent that this is its first outing with the motorbike gameplay mechanics, as it controls a bit looser than I feel like it should, which caused me to just barely not be able to dodge certain obstacles in time. Whenever I had to ride on a wall or in a circular tube, the field-of-view felt too tight to see what was ahead properly.

This week's PlayStation Showcase featured a lot of surprises, from Square Enix's Foamstars to a full Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake. The biggest shocker, though, came when Bungie's logo flashed on the screen. The developer has been solely focused on the Destiny series for the last decade, so any new announcement would be significant news. For a moment, the sci-fi trailer looked like a teaser for Destiny 3. The truth would be far more surprising when we saw the game's title: Marathon.

You need to read this free Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 prequel comic

While Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is supposed to come out sometime this fall, we don't actually have that much information on the video game's narrative or any other differences from its predecessors. That's why those looking forward to the game should check out the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 prequel comic, which was previously released physically, but is now available for free on Marvel's website.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (2023) No. 1, which was written by Christos Gage and illustrated by Ig Guara, was released physically on May 6 for Free Comic Book Day. Now, just a few days later, Insomniac Games and Marvel have followed up on their promise to make the book available digitally for free, so you can easily read it on Marvel.com.
It's a breezy read that doesn't contain many shocking revelations, but gives more context on what Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and Mary Jane Watson have been up to since the events of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. In terms of new villains introduced here that could show up in the game, the Spider-Men fight The Tarantula, an arachnid-themed assassin, and The Hood, a gang leader who's trying to use magic for personal gain.
On the more character-focused side of things, we learn that Peter, Miles, and MJ are now all working together as a tight crime-fighting unit. Peter is now trying to get a teaching certificate and to convince MJ to move in with him. As Peter now lives in Aunt May and Uncle Ben's old house in Queens, that could mean we'll get to explore more boroughs of New York City in Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Meanwhile, Miles decides to pursue a Music Technology major at Empire State University, and J. Jonah Jameson decides to buy back ownership of the Daily Bugle. 
There's little more than a passing mention of Norman Osborn, and we don't see Harry Osborn, Kraven, or Venom in action, so there aren't any must-know reveals from this free comic. Still, it's worth a read if you want to get reacquainted with this Marvel universe, the headspace of the heroes within it, and the gadgets they use ahead of Marvel's Spider-Man 2's launch. 
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will release exclusively for PlayStation 5 sometime this fall.
