Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that a new version of the venerable combat game Warhawk is now available exclusively for the PlayStation 3—and eager gamers can get the title either on Blu-ray disc or via download from the PlayStation Network.
Supporting up to 32 players online—and up to four on a single PS3 console—Warhawk is a remake of the original PlayStation game, and puts players in the middle of frantic vehicle- and infantry-based combat games like Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, and a new strategy-based “Zone Mode.” The game offers online leaderboards, stats, and rankings so players can select their opponents, and offers user-to-user online communications tools—for instance, the retail box edition ships with a piano black Jabra Bluetooth headset.
“Warhawk’s furious action-combat gameplay and brilliantly detailed landscapes demonstrate PS3’s many capabilities,” said SCEA’s Jeff Reese, director of software marketing, in a statement. “Players will move seamlessly from the fierce aerial dogfights to the heated armed assaults and vehicular attacks on the ground. Warhawk is an exhilarating addition to the PS3 line-up this fall.”
Sony says Warhawk leverages the PS3’s processing power to offer an unparalleled level of details to the game’s visuals; in an interesting move, Sony also enables players to use their PS3 consoles as host servers for online Warhawk games, so player would have the option of joining games hosted by Sony or by players anywhere in the world.
Warhawk is prices at $39.99 for download via the PlayStation Network; the box retail version is priced at $59.99 and comes with that Jabra Bluetooth headset plus bonus video content. The ESRB has rated Warhawk T for “Teen.”
