Here’s everything Ubisoft showcased during its E3 2018 presentation

Ubisoft just wrapped up its press conference leading up to the E3 gaming conference, previewing 10 games slated to arrive between now and the end of 2019. The publisher opened the show with a colorful musical number promoting Just Dance 2019 that was led by a dancing panda. The show ended with some exciting-yet-brutal swordplay pulled from Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Ubisoft’s event was probably one the most exciting we’ve seen thus far.

Beyond Good & Evil 2

Dubbed a “space opera,” the long-awaited sequel to Beyond Good & Evil is an open-world action-adventure RPG taking place at the end of the 24th century. As previously reported, it’s actually a prequel to the first installment and the clip shown during Ubisoft’s press conference revealed Jade as the antagonist. The company also introduced the Space Monkey program, a partnership with HitRecord to integrate community-made music and visual assets into the upcoming game starting now.

You can read the full story on our website.

Trials Rising

Trials is all about crashing in style and getting up again, and the upcoming sequel is no different. The franchise receives a “fresh visual look” and takes place in iconic locations for your motorcycle platforming pleasure, including Yellowstone Park and Paris. You’ll be able to compete with other players represented as ghosts, through local multiplayer or online. Players can also customize and share their outfits and bike “skins.”

Trials Rising goes into closed beta later this year and will land on the PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in February 2019.

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2

This was likely the biggest game of the show. The story takes place seven months after the black plague appeared on physical money and wiped out most of North America. You are the last line of defense for the United States, thus if you fail, history will be written by tyrants. Outside the story and gameplay, the conference revealed that Year One will produce three DLC packs in the form of episodes with new storylines, new areas to explore, and more. The multiplayer aspect will also include raids supporting eight players.

You can register for the beta now. Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 raids the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on March 15, 2019. Extended coverage about the reveal can be read on our website,  along with our hands-on coverage.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle DLC

The big news with Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle during Ubisoft’s press conference is that the Donkey Kong DLC, aka Donkey Kong Adventure, arrives on June 26,. Joining Donkey Kong on this expanded adventure will be Rabbid Cranky Kong and Rabbid Peach. Also included are four new areas, Donkey Kong’s banana-rang weapon, and a new crossbow used by Rabbid Cranky Kong.

Skull & Bones

Piracy is dead in the Caribbean, so Ubisoft is sending you and your crew into the Indian Ocean. It’s a shared world where every player encounter matters, whether you team up to take on a nearby Portuguese frigate or turn against each other after confiscating the frigate’s loot. This portion of the show demonstrated the Skull & Bones‘ naval combat gameplay, including ship-to-ship battles and methods for sneaking around heavily-guarded waters. You can read our full coverage here.

Skull & Bones will set sail on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2019.

Transference

Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision introduced this game during Ubisoft’s E3 press event last year, and nothing has really changed information-wise since then. It’s a first-person exploration game where a “troubled scientist” pulls you into the minds of his three digitally captured family members. Ubisoft calls Transference a “psychological thriller” where you have to solve a mystery from three different perspectives.

Transference arrives this fall on VR and “traditional” gaming platforms.

Starlink: Battle for Atlas

The big news with Starlink: Battle for Atlas is that Ubisoft teamed up with Nintendo to add Fox McCloud as a playable character in the Nintendo Switch version. The game itself relies on physical starships you can customize on the fly in the real world to adapt your virtual ship to the current in-game situation. It’s a space combat simulator originally revealed during Ubisoft’s E3 show last year. You can read more in-depth coverage about the Fox McCloud aspect on our website.

Starlink: Battle for Atlas flies onto the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on October 16, 2018.

For Honor DLC

For starters, the conference revealed that you can now download the Starter Edition via Uplay on PC for free right now until June 18. The other For Honor tidbit introduced the Marching Fire update that adds a new faction, four new fighters, a castle siege mode called “Breach,” significant “visual enhancements,” and an unlimited single-player and two-person co-op player-vs-environment mode Ubisoft will reveal at a later date.

For Honor‘s Marching Fire update burns on October 16, 2018.

The Crew 2 Open Beta

The only big news with Ubisoft’s upcoming open-world racing game is that the open beta begins at 1 p.m. June 21 and ends at the same time on June 25. The test will contain the first two levels and the game’s entire open world. The demo also provides solo play and up to three local friends in co-op mode.

The full retail release launches on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on June 29, 2018. You can preload The Crew 2 starting now.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

This upcoming installment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise sets your role-playing journey in ancient Greece in 431 B.C. You are a simple mercenary, an outcast destined to become a Greek hero who’s armed with the spear of Leonidas. With Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, you can pick your character — Kassandra or Alexios — and stick with that choice throughout the game. The gameplay showcased at the end of Ubisoft’s conference highlighted Kassandra as she sliced her way through opponents until she came face-to-face with a brute of a warrior named Diokles.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey arrives on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 2, 2018.

Here’s what E3 2023 could look like without Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft
Playstation character wall at E3 2018

Let's start with the good news: E3 2023 will be held in its in-person format once again after three long years of digital events necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, this time with ReedPop at the helm. The bad news is that Sony, Xbox, and Nintendo -- gaming's "Big 3" -- may not show up at the industry’s biggest convention this summer.

This is according to a report from IGN citing multiple sources, who claimed the companies won’t be a part of the show or make appearances on the floor at the Los Angeles Convention Center in any way. Their absence from this year’s E3, especially Nintendo’s, may come as a shock to the gaming community, but it's not such a surprise when looking at the past few iterations of E3. Even before the pandemic locked everyone down in 2020, Sony and Xbox had been hosting their own E3-style livestreams, so it was more likely they would do it again this year anyway. Nintendo, on the other hand, managed to show off its upcoming games via Nintendo Direct streams and at its booth, console kiosks and all.

Summer Game Fest returns just before E3 2023 next June
The official artwork confirming Summer Game Fest's return on June 8, 2023.

Geoff Keighley has confirmed when Summer Game Fest will return in June 2023. It will begin with a live kickoff show on June 8, 2023, placing Keighley's game announcement alternative less than a week before E3's grand (intended) 2023 return.
Unlike past years, Summer Game Fest Live Kickoff 2023 will feature a live audience, like Geoff Keighley's The Game Awards. It will take place in the YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park, with tickets going on sale in early 2023. It will still be livestreamed across platforms like YouTube and Twitch, though. It's currently unknown who's participating, how long Summer Game Fest will run afterward, or if it will feature a Summer Game Fest Play Days-like element for fans. Still, Keighley says all of that info will be revealed ahead of the event next year, teasing what people can expect.
"In keeping with tradition, we'll have tons of exciting announcements from the developers that are pushing the games industry forward, and will once again highlight other publisher digital events, demos, and more surprises to be announced in the coming months," Keighley says in a press release.
That June 8 start date, and the other Summer Game Fest events likely to follow, put Keighley's show just ahead of E3 2023. The ESA and ReedPop plan to bring E3 back between June 13 and June 16, 2023. With five days of lead time on E3, Summer Game Fest can coexist with the long-running gaming conference and encompass the plethora of publisher showcases that tend to precede E3.
Geoff Keighley made it clear that he wants Summer Game Fest and E3 to coexist for a while. "We've had extensive conversations with ReedPop about E3," he said in an interview with Epic Games Store. "I think it'll kind of fit together and flow kind of from what we're doing into what they're doing and stuff. E3, to me, is this kind of master brand that represents gaming news in June."
With the start date of Summer Game Fest confirmed, the coexistence of these two summer gaming events is a reality. Summer Game Fest returns on June 8, 2023.

Ubisoft and more offer ways to play purchased Google Stadia games elsewhere
The protagonist of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla shouting in battle and wielding two axes.

Google recently announced that it plans to shutter its cloud gaming service Stadia in early 2023, leaving players who used it as one of their primary platforms in an awkward situation. Google already promised to refund people for their Google Stadia hardware and software purchases, but people are still losing access to games they enjoyed and save files they possibly dumped hours into. Thankfully, some developers are working on ways to help Stadia players.
The most notable studio to help Stadia players is Ubisoft, which was Google's earliest partner for the technology via an Assassin's Creed Odyssey demo. "While Stadia will shut down on January 18, 2023, we're happy to share that we're working to bring the games you own on Stadia to PC through Ubisoft Connect," Ubisoft tweeted. "We'll have more to share regarding specific details, as well as the impact for Ubisoft+ subscribers, at a later date." Thankfully, the Stadia versions of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Far Cry 6, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, and Watch Dogs: Legion support cross-progression, so players won't lose their save files.

Ubisoft isn't the only developer to help. Developer Muse Games is giving Embr Steam codes to those who played its comedic co-op firefighting game on Stadia if they email the developer with screenshots of Embr in their Stadia library. Meanwhile, IO Interactive confirmed that it is "looking into ways for you to continue your Hitman experience on other platforms," as the World of Assassination trilogy was available on Google Stadia.
There's still the matter of the five Google Stadia exclusives: Gylt, Hello Engineer, Outcasters, Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle, and PixelJunk Raiders. So far, only one of those games seems like it will be saved. PixelJunk Raiders developer Q-Games said in a blog post that "we hope to find a way to continue to share the vibrant worlds of Planet Tantal in the future, and we’re open to discussing opportunities to find the right publishing partner to make it happen.. Tequila Works, tinyBuild, Splash Damage, and Bandai Namco Entertainment did not respond to requests for comment from Digital Trends.
While the shutdown of Google Stadia is disappointing for players like myself who enjoy cloud gaming, at least players will be get refunds, and in some cases get the game for a new platform.
