Xbox Series X update adds long-requested quick resume update

Microsoft is rolling out a new update for Alpha Skip-Ahead Xbox Insider members that will allow users to see all active Quick Resume saves on the Xbox Series X/S. This feature makes it easier to navigate through all suspended games for quick and easy access.

Quick Resume is a feature introduced with Xbox Series X/S that allows players to suspend and save the current state of a game. This means users can quickly jump between titles, picking up right from the most recent save with ease.

The update will also include a list on the console’s Guide feature that indicates all of the games that support Quick Resume. This theoretically should prevent users from losing progress in games that don’t support it.

While Microsoft briefly covered the new features in an Xbox Wire post, Xbox Engineering Lead Eden Marie has a much more detailed explanation of the new Quick Resume enhancements as part of a Twitter thread.

Alpha and Alpha Skip Ahead Insiders: in case you were wondering why I shared that tip on reordering groups!

Eden’s tweet features images ofwhat the Quick Resume menu looks like, and advises users to “delete your Quick Resume save for games you don’t care about anymore.”

That isn’t all users can expect from the update. Xbox Series X is getting a new audio feature that allows players to enable sound to pass through the console itself, directly to a home setup, for better quality. The update also addresses certain issues such as Hulu app crashes, incorrect profile colors displaying, and audio problems when Dolby Atmos is enabled.

Remember, this update is currently for Alpha Skip-Ahead Xbox Insider members only, but will roll out to all users at a later time. Xbox Insiders get to test updates early to provide feedback before they go live worldwide.

Doom: The Dark Ages launches next year, and Xbox is bringing it to PS5
Doom: The Dark Ages Doomslayer

During the June 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft revealed Doom: The Dark Ages. It's a medieval take on the first-person shooter series that's typically set during contemporary times. It's set to launch in 2025 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. The game will also launch on Xbox Game Pass.

Doom: The Dark Ages is a prequel, with the Doomslayer donning animal fur and spikes on his shoulder-blade armor. With his trusty and classic shotgun, he's ready to take down demons. However, he now has a new shield with blades that he can rev up like a chainsaw. The trailer shows the Doomslayer even throwing his shield at them like Captain America. He will also be able to ride a dragon at some point in the game, highlighting the fantasy elements of the game.

Valorant is coming to consoles but won’t have crossplay
Key art for Valorant on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Valorant is coming to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S as soon as next week with a limited beta test. Riot Games announced these long-awaited ports for its competitive hero shooter during Summer Game Fest 2024. Notably, while Valorant on consoles will feature cross-progression, it won't have crossplay.

The lack of crossplay may come as a disappointment to some players who hope to party up with their friends on PC; Riot Games says that it made this decision "to maintain Valorant's standard for competitive integrity." It wouldn't be fair for those with a controller to face off against players using a keyboard and mouse to control the game, after all. It also wouldn't make sense because Riot Games is not only adapting Valorant's control scheme for the Xbox and PlayStation controllers but reworking some gameplay features as well. Namely, it added a new feature called Focus that makes hip-fire feel more precise on a controller. Valorant Production Director Arnar Gylfason elaborated on this in a comment provided to Digital Trends.

Amazon’s ambitious MMO New World is finally coming to PS5 and Xbox this October

Amazon is finally bringing its MMO New World to consoles this October, and that’s coming as part of a larger rework of the fantasy game called New World: Aeternum.

When New World hits consoles on October 15, it will also add crossplay, so you can group up with your friends on different platforms. That said, it won’t feature cross-progression, as the characters you make will be locked to whatever platform you made them on. The controls and UI have also been reworked to function better with a controller, and Amazon Games expects New World to keep update parity across all three platforms starting this October.
