What's going on in the world? You can find out using CNNgo on Roku

Roku users have a new channel to enjoy: CNNgo. The popular streaming company announced today that U.S. consumers will now be able to use their Roku players or TVs to stream content from the CNN online platform.

All Roku users will be able to find free news clips, videos, and collections to browse through and watch, but those with a pay TV subscription will also be able to access much more. In addition to 24/7 live breaking news, there are full-length CNN original programs on-demand. Among those shows available are Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, This is Life with Lisa Ling and Mike Rowe’s Somebody’s Gotta Do It. Subscribers will also have access to past show segments, plus related videos and photo galleries.

“With the release of CNNgo on Roku streaming devices, CNN is continuing to give viewers control over their news experience on the platform of their choice,” said Rajin Persaud, vice president of digital video and TVE products, in a related press release.

The patnership does make it easy for users to find news of interest — CNNgo’s top videos of the day and most popular news videos are now available on the Roku home screen. Plus, search features will let users find related coverage and browse by category. There’s a lot for news junkies to like, but the fact that much of the content requires a TV subscription means it’s not what cord-cutters would hope to see.

For CNN, it makes sense to bring the platform to Roku. A recent survey by Parks Associates found that the company’s devices are the most common non-gaming streaming media players. CNNgo is also currently available to Apple TV users, and has been since launching on the device in March.

CNNgo is available now under “News & Weather” in Roku’s channel store.

CNN+ lands on Roku today

A week after it soft-launched in web browsers and six days after it was officially available to nearly everyone else, CNN+ is now coming to the largest streaming platform in the United States — Roku.

It'll require an update to the existing CNN Go app, which will be home to both live CNN content (which still requires some sort of live TV subscription), as well as all the new CNN+ content, which includes up to a dozen live daily shows, a handful of new original series, and more than 1,000 hours of programming. If the CNN Go app doesn't update on its own, you can force Roku to check by going to the System Update section of the Settings menu.

Here’s what you can do if Roku loses YouTube in December

Come December 9, it's very possible that Roku -- the No. 1 streaming platform in the United States, and No. 2 in the rest of the world -- could lose access to YouTube due to an ongoing dispute with Google over ... something. (Roku says it's not about money, but it's totally about money.) Losing YouTube also would mean losing access to YouTube TV, because that's currently the only way to get to the No. 2 live TV streaming service on Roku due to the fallout from this whole fracas.

It's exhausting as someone who uses YouTube TV. It's exhausting as someone who uses Roku. And it raises the very real question about what your options are if, come the second week of December, YouTube and YouTube TV no longer are available on Roku.
